Dead CD Drive

While I was loading a new game (Rome Total War) my CD drive began failing to read the CD. At first I cursed the game but was soon dismayed to find that NO cd would work. DVD's work fine.

A dreaded call at 11:00 pm to Tech Support turned out surprisingly well. My hold time was 8 seconds and within a few minutes they were collecting info to ship me a brand new drive. I didn't even have to argue for one! The only problem? They have none in stock at the moment.

Has anyone else had this problem with the CD laser burning out so soon? I've only had this machine for about five weeks.

Also, has anyone upgraded or changed out this drive and can maybe tell me if it is a difficult task?

Hi notewriter, did this failure happen on your 7405GX?
[if so, that didnt last long ].

While I have no info to offer on this issue, I am curius to discover how difficult the replacement will be.

Yes, this happened on my 7405GX. I was disappointed to say the least. The tech on the phone (who, as a side note, was very obviously thoroughly enjoying his dinner while on the phone with me!) said that it is quite simple to replace and that if the written instructions aren't helpful that they will walk me through it over the phone. I'm not really worried about replacing the drive so much as I am worried about the fact that it crapped out so soon. I've NEVER had a CD drive on a laptop or desktop die on me.

I'll be sure to keep the forum posted on the status...how long it takes to receive and how easy it is to replace...

By the way, I did ask if this is a common problem with this model and although he said it wasn't, he had to laugh when he told me that they were out of stock on this part...

Thanks Thunder PC...they did say it was easy but sometimes easy isn't. You never realize how much you miss something until you can't use it...no games for me until I get that drive!
