Looking for lightweight gaming notebook ...

Thread Starter
Can someone suggest a somewhat lightweight/rugged gaming notebook? I'm thinking somewhere between 4 and 9lbs. It should be midsized, not compact, and not a desktop replacement.

I don't care much for 17" widescreens, or anything like that. I just want a standard notebook that has a great video card and a decent processor.

Any suggestions as to where I should start looking?

Thanks!

I want to buy something that'll be good for at least a few months. :-)

I'm looking for a notebook with either a radeon 9700, radeon 9800, or one of the more recent Gerforce2go chipsets.

I would have recomended the Sager 5690, but htey stoped selling it.

check out the ferrari 3400...good cpu and MR9700...

it really depends on your price range, when you plan to buy, and if you can wait to see what the new intel chipset has to offer that we should see Pentium M processors with PCIe (hopefully graphic card upgradable like the new DTR PCIe laptops like the sager9860/alienware7700/etc)

I second the Ferrari 3400, it's at buy.com or the 3200 at PCtorque. The 4750 is more powerful (better hd and more powerful processor) at a bit more money, weight, and a bit less battery life.

That laptop looks amazing. Are there any sites that will customize the way it ships? I'd want 1gig of ram, and a 7200rpm drive. How is the Radeon 9700 for most current games? Is it decent enough for the big boys? Doom3, HL2, etc?

Thanks for all the input!

Make sure you research the Sager 3790 before you buy. And I would also consider waiting for lighter weight PCI-E notebooks to come out unless you are desperate for a laptop now. They have much more powerfull graphics cards and the ability to upgrade them in the future.

Acer laptops are generally not customizable. Some resellers may offer that option, though, if they modify the laptops themselves. Don't know how it affects the warranty.

How about a place that would sell it with financing options? That's one of the only attractive thing about the Dells.

I would also get the Acer Ferrari 3200 or 3400. It has the Radeon 9700 128MB, and LV Athlon 64 CPU. Light weight and small form factor for it's power and features.

I got to play with a Ferrari 3200 the past few days. Other than it getting toasty after a few hours of use and fair battery life, it's definitely a nice machine.

I'm in the states. Can you tell me how well this machine handles more modern games? Doom3, HL2, etc? I have a desktop right now with a Radeon 9800 Pro that I'd like to replace with this laptop, and I am, of course, willing to take a small performance hit on the graphics card. I'm just wondering how much of a hit it is. Are these games playable?

HL2 and Doom3 are playable with an MR9700 128 from what I've seen on here.

or, you can have a look into mine. The BenQ Joybook 7000 provided you live in europe or Asia or have a friend there willing to relay it over to u, as they dont sell them in the US . 1.95kg, or 4.29 pounds fully loaded. The newer ones ship with 1.6GHz Dothans now. The RAM and HDD are covered by panels that are easily removable so you can swap them out, though BenQ says that if you open the HDD panel, any warrenty associated with the HDD or any problems caused by the HDD isnt covered by their warrenty, but unrelated problems, like the LCD monitor screwing up or the CPU dies are still fully covered.
The 9700 can play Doom3 at 1024 x 768 with a bit of eye candy at acceptable framerates, plays Battlefield Vietnam at that resolution at medium quality with decent framerates and pretty much walks over most RTS games at max settings at 1024x768.
The LCD is also top notch, some impressive vewing angles and amazingly sharp colours (BenQ is one of the largest LCD manufacturers in the world), IMO, it's better than my desktop Topcon and is slightly better than my dad's Phillips. After going at Half Life 2 for a bit on it and a bit of UT2004, i havent noticed any ghosting on it whatsoever so response times are fast, though as you see, i dont have any specs on it.
And it's dark blue to really dark purple. IMO, it's better than the Ferarri colour. I dont exactly dig the bright shiny red. It's like it's got a big red "Steal Me" sticker on the top of the notebook.

But if you cant get the BenQ, the Ferarri is still a great notebook, great performance by looking at Snorre's benchmarks and pretty good battery life with some 64 bit capability for you later on when Windows XP 64bit comes out.

As for a performance hit, i have a desktop that i use in tandem with my notebook, it's a P4 2.4C clocked at 3.3GHz with 1GB of PC4400 and a 9800pro. As for synthetic benchmarks, im scoring almost double that of my notebook in 01 and 03. Around 20,000 in 01 and around 7000 in 03. As for game performance, I can play pretty much all games on my desktop with maxed out quality settings with the exception of Doom3 and not too sure on HL2 yet as i havent tried max settings. As i said above, the notebook is alot more limited than the desktop, though hardly unplayable. A MR9700 card is already faster than what the majority of gamers now use.
