I'm just wondering how much of a hit it is. Are these games playable?
Personally, I get roughly the same fps with my desktop (P4 @ 3,5GHz, Radeon 9800 Pro @ XT) at 1280x1024 with 4 or 6xAA, as I do with the Ferrari 3200 (AMD64 2800+, 9700 Mobile) at 1024x768 with no AA or no more than 2x. With the screen size difference (21" vs 15") I find it quite acceptable, considering there simply isn't a better graphics card alternative for light laptops.

For the time being your never going to be able to compete with a desktop 9800pro although the future is bright its just looking rather large and heavey with pci express graphics coming to laptops they are going to help bridge the gap between high end pc graphics and high end laptop graphics.

But thats not to say the mobile 9700 is a bad card at all depending on what set up you get it in A)Im told not all configuration make use of the 9700 graphical capabilities like the acer 3400 as they only use 4xAGP and the 3400 use's the desktop standard 8xAGP. B)128mb is necessary however any more is over kill for now. If you not one for benchmarks which snorre with his 3200 currently has even better ones than me although that comes down to me not having the balls to o/c mine any further here are some real life stats for you

MOH Pacific Assult - 1280 x 1024 every setting on high
Half life 2 - 1450 x 1050 every setting on high 4xAA
NFS Underground 2 - Highest Res Full screen AA Every setting on high
Tiger Woods 2005 - All the highest setting
Fifa 2005 - All the highest setting
Counter Strike Source - 1450 x 1050 every setting on high 4xAA

Every single one of the above games runs smooth and beautiful a I have a radeon 9500pro in my desktop and my laptop out performs it my mate has halflife 2 running on his simally spec desktop with a 9800pro now he can double my benchmarks but the only differnce in Halflife 2 is he can run with 6xAA otherwise they really do look the same. Dont worry about gaming this and most laptops at the high end side with a correctly configured Gfx card and a decent processor will play everything including Farcry and doom 3 which my mate with his 3200 can play fine i just need to finish a few games before i move onto them.

Go with a Alienware Area51-m, about 6-7lbs. Well, look at my sig . I have the Roswell-m which is exactly the same as Area51-m but I have the NVida Quadro Go1000 (which rocks ). Even though it is already outdone by the PCI-E cards but the laptops that Alienware makes with those are a ton. I bring my laptop with me everywhere and I play UT2K4 maxed settings without a problem. I also play FFXI a lot on it at maxed settings and I barely get any lag in game, it is usualy due to just the numbers of players around. I had the same lag when I was playing with my PS2 so I know it isn't due to my laptop. Look into it, and take anything you hear about Alienware being bad with a grain of salt. I have never ever had a problem with Alienwares Customer service, they have gone out of their way to help me even when I was the one who caused the problem . Heck, I even scratched my case with a screw driver and they said they would replace it for me (if they had one available) when I sent it in to be fixed for something else. So, yeah Alienwares rock and you won't be sorry if you choose to go with them.

Still wandering if anyone knows of a place that sells the Acer Ferarri 3400 with financing options?
