better deals for $1200?

My friend is trying to sell me his brand new toshiba m30x:

Intel Pentium M 725 Processor (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 400MHz FSB)
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
512MB PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM (256MBx2)
15.4" Wide-Screen Display (1280x800) w/TruBrite Technology
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 Graphics w/128MB of VRAM
40GB Hard Drive
DVD/CD-RW Combo
Intel Wireless Pro 2200BG (802.11g)

The advantage I see in this deal is pretty good specs and the TRUBRITE screen and wants to give it to me for $1200.

This looks like a great deal, but are there anything else that compares for the price? I was interested in CL56, but would rather have this over that anyday. Any info would be helpful! Thanks!

I don't think that's an altogether bad deal, especially since you don't have to pay 30 dollars extra for shipping. The hard drive and processor speed is a little too small for me, though. Not sure about better deals for $1,200, though I'm sure they're around in the brand-name laptop area. That's the place where I didn't do much research.

That is an excellent deal. I say go for it!

i doubt you will be able to pick up a lappy with ati 9700 128mb anywhere else for that price. (well...in combination with alll the other nice things).

i do have to agree that the CPU is a bit slowish (could easily be a 1.7 or 2.0) and the hdd...well you can always swap a 7k60 in yourself

would the sonoma chipset... i just read about it... being released make a lot of the current notebooks that much cheaper? or probably not? i wouldn't mind waiting until next year

Dude, that is a great deal, if it is really what it appears, but my question is why he is selling it.

The price won't drop immediately after the release of Sonoma, I don't think, but the price of Sonoma will be at a premium high like all technology when it first appears. I know Sonoma is on the doorstep, but I just ordered my laptop anyway.
