Also, does anyone know whether it might be possible to upgrade to a UXGA screen sometime after purchase? (Though I doubt I would part with the laptop for that long..)
This is the question I wanted to ask. I also wanted to see a revew of a sxga screen. If it has no ghosting, I can stant the lower res.

SXGA, not SXGA+.

See my post here for the different screen resolutions and common features.

Or see my post in this thread for how to decide what screen resolution to get. For robertpb, try running your current computer at SXGA (1280x1024) resolution and see if that lets you get enough stuff on the screen, because that's the most stuff you'll be able to fit on an SXGA screen.

For me, SXGA = not buying it, so I have to decide whether to go for the 5680 or wait for the possible UXGA in the 8890.

The question is... is the 16" SXGA a better screen than previous 16.1" UXGA or is it the same? Keep in mind I'm ignoring resolution in the "quality" label.

If there both using the same screens as before, then I may get the 5680. I dunno. The screen I'm sure will be fine with minimal ghosting.

Btw, Adam's revised list mentioned the screen will be the same as the one that came out a few weeks ago when they did away with the 16.1". Was it an upgrade in quality from the previous 8887 screen?

*prays for 5680 to be released with 8890*

Otherwise I may have to attempt to convince my roommate to let me use his computer until mine arrives...

*prays for paint to be available with 5680*

I'm also wondering this as well. I'm also courious is there will be new cases. I know that the pictures above the reviews show the same laptop case, Alienware did a revamp on their case so it's possible(but unlikley) that sager followed. I'm also would like a review of the SXGA screens on the 8890 as soon as possible. I leave for school in a few weeks and need to know.

Dang! I guess I won't have my raided 8890 at start of fall classes

Oh well, just 2 more weeks of waiting to order

least they could do is provide a SXGA+ rather than just the SXGA

Also, considerin the resulotion size is 1280 x 960...how does this affect gaming? Say for instance when hl2 or doom3 comes out and i want crisp gfx.....would 1280 x 960 be good? is it possible for me to go 1600 x 1200 while playin a high intense gfx game or will it look blocky cuz its not at its native res? Thats the only thing im worried about with this sxga

SXGA is 1280x1024, not 1280x960.

That's actually the resolution of your TV (unless its HDTV).

Generally 1280x1024 is fine for games - it'll look like TV. Most games are designed to run at 800x600 and look ok, and many are incapable of higher resolutions anyways. So 1280x1024 is more than sufficient for games.

A good graphics card will interpolate pixel shading when transferring from a smaller (say 800x600) image to a larger (say 1400x1050) native resolution screen, and the result looks smooth rather than blocky, and for graphics in general this is usually fine.

The only problem with rescaling an image in this manner is that fine lines - particularly the single-pixel width of most text - get blurred over a couple pixels' width. This doesn't bother some people, but it annoys me greatly, so I only like to deal with text at my screen's native resolution.

As for offering an SXGA+, they can only offer what screen makers have available. 16" (or close - 15.7" to 16.1") screens aren't that common, and it wouldn't surprise me if no one makes a SXGA+ in that range.

Sad News!

I was really looking forward to the 8890, but now I hear that it's going to only run SXGA......I can't wait any longer, should I wait for the UXGA? Or Should I buy 5680? I really like the additional specs of the 8890, but love the 5680 screen. Why can't they just have the 5680 screen on the 8890???

No, its not even clsoe to that! 720*480 interlced is regular TV. HDTV maxes at 1024*something interlaced (hence the i).

$$$ price $$$

Does anyone know an estimate of what a 5680 will cost with 1 GB ram, 3.0 GHz, M10-pro? What did the 5670 cost when it came out? Will I be looking at about the same cost?

thanks

Configure a 5670 with 1 GB RAM, 3.06, and the other options you're looking for. Add $300.

That's my ballpark estimate.

1920*1080 interlaced, at least in NTSC land.

1280*720 progressive.

with the extended warranty that looks to be about 2600...sounds good to me.

Donald Stratton from powernotebooks said that the 8890 screen is the best laptop screen he's ever seen. He said that it's maid by sharp. He said it's better that 5670 and the 8890....Maybe he's right, maybe more resolution would have made it not as good. I guess only time will tell.

Its not bad, they are actually meeting their deadline succesfully, they said late july-mid august, and they are meeting their shipment day just by mid august, way to go sager.
No they didnt. They said late july to EARLY August. the 15th or 16th is NOT early August. I for one am getting sick of this...when the 16th rolls around they will be saying wait til 1 September.
