Received my 4760 today (lots of pics)

My review of the 4760.

I visited this forum many times trying to find a link with lots of pictures of the 4760 when researching this particular computer so I thought I would share lots of pics with everyone. I hope I did it correctly.

I have several more pictures so if anybody would like to see them please let me know.

My biggest concern was the screen with a 1440x900 resolution. I have to say that the screen really is very nice but not as nice as Toshiba's CASV screen. But I mostly will be using it for Word and Excel so it will do fine for me.

The keyboard has a very nice feel to it. In fact, I like it better than any other notebook I've tried. I very much like the dedicated numeric pad. This is a feature not found on any of the other 17" widescreens to the best of my knowledge.

The case is a lot more attractive than what I thought it would be after reviewing numerous pictures of it online.

As you can see from the pictures, it came pretty well packed. No damage at all.

I ordered mine without an operating system. I loaded Windows XP Pro and the drivers in about an hour and a half at the office today.

I don't think anyone would be disappointed with this computer unless your'e a hardcore gamer or graphics designer. Again, the screen is nice but even I would prefer a higher resolution.

I ordered mine with the 6-in-1 card reader in lieu of the subwoofer. I figured I would get better use out of it than deeper bass for music and watching movies.

The case is very solid and the weight isn't too bad either.

Well, this is my review for this particular model. Hope this is helpful to somebody looking at this model.

I will be happy to answer any questions.

Thanks everyone.

Mark

For some reason the url didn't work. Anyway, I finally got the pics up.

I did want to add one very important note. The cooling fan seems to run almost non stop. It's not really all that loud but I wonder why it has to stay on constantly. It may go off every 20-30 minutes. I even have it on one of those metal cooling plates to help keep it cool. Any thoughts?

Nice pics! Hey, I am jealous, my 4760 doesn't have an ATI sticker on it like yours does in pic 15. I do have the pentium 4 Intel Inside sticker -- just no ATI radeon sticker.

I also don't understand the placement of the Intel sticker, as mine is a full sticker height below the speaker -- as if there was supposed to be another sticker above it -- yet your Intel sticker is to left of your right speaker under the Enter key and the ATI sticker is above the speaker.

Oh well, really minor point, not really important

Just think of how mind numbing a job it would be to put stickers on a laptop case for a living... How many beers would you need while working to keep sane.

Hey med64, nice pics!! Those sweet pics are making me think twice about waiting til October for the next 4760... You current 4760 owners would luck out if there was the M10 upgrade available down the line.

Yeah, good job med64 and nice laptop! Ref. pic # 4, is that a chest freezer you're displaying on? What a great idea for a laptop cooling device! Not very mobile, but just what you need when you're gaming!

MrMsyvc,

Yeah, I figured the only way to keep this bad boy cool was to fill an ice chest with 20 lbs. of ice. It works great except for the condensation on the screen. Maybe I could design some wind shield wipers for it. Just Kidding.... It's a vertical drawing file. We design sprinkler systems and store our old drawings in these cabinets. As far mobility, it really isnt' that bad. Really. I worked last night at home and it took about 2 hours before my legs starting hurting. It does get a little warm however, so I use one of those cooling plates that I bought at CompUSA. It works great.
So far I've been completely satisfied except for the following:

1. The fan runs excessively.
2. The screen is nice but with a white background you can make out the fiber or whatever they use for these laptop screens. In other words, it looks like your looking through a really really small screened window. It's only noticable with a white background.
3. My biggest complaint is the fact that starting yesterday, I have a thin red line running down the middle of my screen. I think I've gotten a lemon screen which can happen on any computer from any manufacturer. Technology isn't perfect and I'm not really upset other than the fact that I have to send it back and wait for another one. I may hold off for one with a higher resolution and bigger video card not that the 64 MB isn't sufficient for me. It's just that you have to have the latest and greatest on the market, right.

Anyway, sorry for being long winded this morning. I just had a cup of coffee and it's gone straight to my fingers.

Yeah, the fan on my 8887 runs a fair amount. It doesn't bother me unless I'm computing in a small area and the mouse pad is right next to the laptop, then my hand gets hot! Perhaps I should go lefty, but the learning curve is more than I care to deal with. Bummer about the screen. I'd RMA it right away so there's no questions, then upgrade whenever that's likely to be available.
