M5405

We picked up the M5405 in November when they first appeared at BestBuy.
My son really likes it, and uses it every day. Previously he had an Inspiron 4100
that got ripped off, and he likes this eMachine better.

The BestBuy list price was $999. They offered a $150 rebate (which we've
since received) and eMachines offered another $100 rebate (still waiting
for it).

But your $649 cost beats that!

Although we like the laptop there are several nits. The power brick gets
surprisingly hot while charging. The only software restore disk is a single
DVD (the previous Inspiron included separate CDs for bundled applications),
I couldn't find anyplace in the documentation what the specs are for the
battery. Nor did I find specs re memory type and upgrades. When you press
Fn+F2 to start the wireless network it takes sooooooo long for it to come up
that at first I thought it wasn't working. Very rarely the builtin wireless "g"
network support causes our LinkSys "b" router to hang. And configuring the
wireless networking required a bit of futzing around (highly technical word,
"futzing").

hey, thanks for the response! glad to hear that your son likes it.

how is the build quality of the laptop? screen brightness and clarity? since you noted the powerbrick rather than the laptop itself, would i be correct in assuming that it doesn't get hot? how is the loudness of the fan?

thanks in advance!

I bought this laptop last December and really like it. Very stable.. fairly good build. Great LCD screen. The LCD is the main reason I chose this over the HP's i was looking at..

It is fairly quiet as well. I have had no issues with it to this point with daily use. I am looking for a battery for it though as I would like to have a spare on hand. Unfortunatley I can't find on on the e-machines website, and support suggested a completely different looking battery from Gateway... weird.

I have found a few off brand batteries on line for the m5405, but would rather buy one direct from e-machines to be sure for the same price...

Other than the battery, no real complaints. Had some issues with my firmware on my linksys router, but that had nothing to do with this lappy.
