Defrag

How long do you guys defrag? I also was wondering if I should defrag if I didn't for over a month.
I don't until my computer is dead, but I'm bad at maintenance. Once a month sounds good though, just do it overnight.

I check about once a week to see if Windows recommends a defrag.

Personally, I defrag every night, using norton systemwork's defrag utility, I know it may seem extreme, but I use my computer at school every day for things such as video editing, so it is nice to have a freshly defraged computer every morning

About once every week or two, when I am on my way out the door for a couple hours.

I use a really awesome defrag program called O & O defrag. It's probably the best software out there, better than anything I've ever used. One of the nice features is that it has "Sensing" software that will automatically defrag your drives when they need it. It operates in the background so you never need to do anything to it, and best of all its "Sensing" software will also monitor your computer for down time to ensure that it is defragging your drives when you aren't using the computer (obviously it needs to stay on for this). I'm one of those people who believes in automation (to a point) so that I don't have to worry if I'm defragging enough, scanning for viruses enough, or scanning for spyware enough.

I dunno if a daily defrag is very good for your hard drive, eh.

I would think that it would definately shorten the life of the drive.

If your computer is running correctly and your drive is good you should only need to defrag at the most once a month, unless you are you downloading quite a bit off of the net, in which case you have temp files that are moved to permanent files that are placed in different directories with different names, etc, etc. My advice is to analyze the disk(s) and see if they need defragged about once or twice a month. Also remember to "Clean Up" your drive(s) and you should be all set.

I use Executive Software's Diskkeeper. It has a full suite of timetable options for defragging, but I rarely use that. I think it's a more complete defragging package than the Windows default, and I analyze every couple of days. Invariably, Diskeeper recommends a defrag as frequently as I check, and shows a graph indicating a performance increase in percentages. The most heavily used programs and games will show degradation day by day.

There are no adverse affects defragging daily.

About every 2-4 weeks.

I usually defrag only after deleting lots of large files (axed 10GB the last time I did that then defragged afterward)

I defrag around once a week or when i install or uninstall alot of things.

Also, putting your drives through so many duty cycles does shorten the lifespan of your drive. Thats why server class or enterprise class hard drives are built 'extra tough' to withstand 24/7 continuous duty cycles. This is something your average desktop harddrive wont be able to do without dying really quickly.
