ok. so ibm has basically taken the 9000 out of their thinkpads, except for the firegl version thats 3K+ almost all their computers use the 7500, its really hard to find a t40 with the 32mb 9000 when a while ago it was a standard item. I asked the guy at tech support and he told me it was becuase the chipset they use makes the 7500 faster than the 9000 "like a 1.3 centrino is faster than a 1.8 p4M" was his exact words. now this makes no sense to me, as the centrino is faster because of its higher cache, while the 7500 has nothing on paper to make it even remotely faster than the 9000, and ive never heard this before. I have heard that ibm is fairly slow to officially support the ati drivers, and once they find a stable driver they usually dont support the new ones. does anyone know anything about this? have any benchmarks comparing a 32mb radeon 7500 to a 32mb radeon 9000 ibm t40? its really bizarre.

I am not sure how true that is if IBM claimed they use the 7500 only because it is faster then the 9000.
Since I am not really a hard number cruncher I can point out a few things.
IBM may have optimized their systems to work with the 7500 better then let's say another brand name? ALthough correct me if I am wrong, I thought that when it comes to video cards it has everything to do about the drivers and the company that makes the video card itself is responsible for releasing those drivers?
I have never seen a single benchmark supporting that claim that the 7500, IBM or not out performs the 9000. If you talked to someone at IBM I am betting they were from sales and you just have to realize that they are going to promote their product over saying anything good about the competition or other products that are out their that might surpass theirs in terms of performance or quality etc etc. That's where you really have to do the research on your own pretty much because when you talk to someone from a company of course they are going to try and sell you their product.
A 1.3 centrino I believe would in fact be faster then a 1.8 p4m , but wasn't what you asked him about was the 7500 outperforming the 9000? I could believe that thet centrino outperforms the pentium 4m because it has been proven a couple of times , but that still leaves the graphic card issue.
I think IBM laptops are made aimed solely at the corporate market. They don't seem to have the gamer or even serious multimedia person in mind, although I may be wrong because I haven't looked at alot of their models.
I hope this helps. I wasn't able to find any benchmarks you were asking about.

right its what I figured, took me by surprize that he would make that claim is all heh. also, the two systems they have that come with the 32mb 9000 also have a higher resolution screen than the 7500 models, so that made up my mind. I think they have optimized the 7500 and decided to stick with it over the 9000, and the service rep is giving me bs but its still strange as the 9000 models cost a bit more so you'd think he would want me to buy one of those heh. what I'm getting..
IBM t-40
centrino 1.4
256 ram (will buy 512 from crucial)
CD-RW/DVD
Wi-Fi
32mb Radeon 9000 SXGA+ screen (1400Xwhatever it is)
40gig hd
for $1893.
pretty good deal for ibm and I dont have to worry about them releasing the new radeon any time soon and making mine obsolete hehe. One thing that really makes me want to buy an IBM is resale value, the t23 is still selling for 1K+ on ebay regularly, and its 3 years old! I dont think i'd buy many other computers that were 3 years old for 1k.
