I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure you can. Any harddrive player should be able to be used this way.
As for the ipod vs. dell dj: My biggest problem with the ipod is something I (bewilderingly) never hear people complain about: the sound quality. It's terrible! Ok, that might be an exaggeration, but it certainly isn't great. I wanted (and still kinda do want) an ipod for so long, but when I finally listened to one I was very disappointed. At first I couldn't figure out what it was. I thought the song was encoded at low quality, or the earphones sucked (which they do, but that's not a big problem), or my ears were just off. I've listened to a G1, G3, and a mini and they all sound the same. The music sounds thin, the bass isn't full, and it distorts at a relatively low volume. This is all in comparison to my iRiver 256mb player. Maybe the iRiver's sound is just amazing, I don't know, but it's all I've had to compare it to. I have played a song on the ipod, switched the headphones to my iRiver, and played the exact same song (same file), and the sound is not comparable. It has put me off enough to prevent me from getting the ipod (even though it's so damn cool!) Granted, I am pretty picky about sound quality, so others might not care as much. I have heard the sound quality for the dell dj is 'good' but who knows what that really means. Sorry for the rant about the ipod, it's just something that bothers me. I know people love their ipods, so please don't yell at me for voicing my opinion. If I had the opportunity, I would love to sit down and listen to each of these new harddrive players side by side. Until then, go to cnet and wherever else and read their reviews. You'll get a better idea than asking people on here, unless you have specific questions people can answer.
