Please only vote in the poll if you actually have or have had a 9200 with the WUXGA Screen.

There seems to be some confusion by some people about the screen. There are some people who love it...some people who hate it...and some who don't really care. Not everyone is aware of what everyone thinks about it. Some people are scared off because a lot of people are being very negative about it despite the fact that some people don't mind the screen at all or love the screen.

I want this poll to describe the feelings of everyone who has seen the screen...if there are truly only 1 or 2 people who love/like it and the rest absolutely hate it...I want to see that. I'm betting it's more of a 50/50 split up.

Great idea!

I'll vote in 2 weeks.

To clear up one issue which is this good screen / bad screen possibility. There is not more than one screen, nor is the effect a production flaw. Everybody is getting the same screen, and they all look the same, the only issue is how you react to it. For example, I don't like it, but it doesn't hurt me, and I feel the rest of the laptop is too good for me to pass up on right now. I need a laptop, I need a lot of resolution, I don't wanna spend $2500, I am stuck with the 9200. One of my co-workers however, saw the screen for about 5 seconds from a distance of 10 feet and turned away grasping his eyes in pain. Obviously this is an extreme reaction. So the idea of returning it to get a different WUXGA screen is not a very productive course of action. The only possible reason I could imagine somebody wanting to do this is there is a chance that Dell will switch screens in the future, and you could possibly get one that way. But since nobody has reported anything of this nature, this is a long shot. I'm just hoping that if or when they do change screens, I can make enough of a stink on the phone to let them switch mine out then.

I just want to make sure everyone understands that the opinion I'm looking for is not your opinion of the laptop in general but your opinion of the WUXGA LCD Screen specifically.

It looks pretty split right now. It'd be interesting to know the lighting conditions people used to evaluate their displays. For example, are all of the WUXGA lovers using them under harsh florescent lights? I typically use natural lighting during the day and low-intensity incandescent at night, and I didn't like the 15.4" WUXGA.

I understood that if you were talking to me. Loved the laptop, hated the LCD.

well it applied to you but I was aiming more towards the people who voted that they loved it...I'm kind of surprised by the number of people voting that way so far. Makes me feel good about getting ready to order my WUXGA

Thumbs down on the inspiron 9200 WUXGA Screen.

By the way, on the poll, i returned it and get my money back but i'll hold onto the money until Dell finds an alternate screen.

I have it and think its great. So it's not the best screen ever put on a notebook computer, it's definately not the worst. Everybody has different opinions, some like it some dont. It's just like Chocolate ice cream. I hate it but my wife loves it

I picked "I don't like it but I'm willing to live with it", though I'm a little more positive than that -- more like "I like it but it in spite of it bothering me..." Yeah, I'm a little conficted.

I think the screen is what it is due to the fact that it has anti-glare rather than high gloss (high-gloss is basically a lack of an anti-glare coating). While I don't like the grainy texture and the fact that no viewing angle makes a white background look evenly lit across the whole screen, I hate seeing the reflection of every light source in the room as much or more (which I think is what the alternative to the anti-glare coating is). Maybe I'm trying to pep myself up 'cause I'm stuck with it...

Anyway, for anybody considering this purchase -- if you really like high resolution, you'll like the screen in spite of it not being the best looking LCD you've ever seen (i'm in this boat). If you prefer better fidelity over resolution, you'll be disapointed.

anyody have an opinion on the lower rez option?

Well I'd say this poll has done it's job...26 owners have put their opinions down and 50% of them right now either love the looks of the screen or are not bothered by it...

Interesting that ppl don't like the screen but will keep the laptop. I could never do that. I wonder if the screen can damage the eyes?

I have the 15.4" WUXGA on my 8600 and love it. Didn't vote in the poll though.

Yes, that is interesting. For me the screen is the first factor I look at when selecting a laptop. It's the part of the computer you have most interaction with. My thought is that some people wish the screen would be more like a Toshiba Qosmio screen, but the 9200 WUXGA is good enough given how they like the rest of the system.

I had a chance to look at a 17" Toshiba Qosmio last night and I was quite impressed. It was only WXGA+ screen, so I may be comparing apple and orange. But the Toshiba is a few lbs heavier, doesn't seemed to be as well built, a few hundred dollars more expensive. But it would be nice to have such a screen as an option for people who want one, perhaps at 1680x1050.

As for the 9200 WUXGA screen, it blows away almost every thing on the market in term of text clarity at ultra high resolution. I wasn't sure if the text was going to too small, now I am very happy with it. I don't know how a glossy screen like the Toshiba Qosmio is for all day working with text, but this 9200 WUXGA with all of its "glitering" background glory is pretty easy on my eyes. And I am old enough to be an uncle.

I'm ordering some pizzas ahead of the delivery of a WUXGA i9200 next week. I'm going to smear my greasy fingers on the desktop LCD screen so I can get used to the look ahead of time.

Even though it's reflective, the Sony WUXGA screen is so clear and bright. If these screens are all built to a standard, I wonder if it's possible to install a screen like that in a 19200. The WSXGA+ on the Sagers look good too.

Has anyone determined the source of these screens?

Bought the 9200 with WUXGA screen a few weeks ago and it arrived yesterday. I put it to the test against my old Fujitsu and compared it to my two 21" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB monitors.

I'm a professional photographer (commercial and industrial work) and I REGULARLY COLOR CORRECT all of my monitors. With that said, the field was even from the beginning of the comparison.

The color out of the box was a little blue, but easily correctible using SpyderPro, creating an ICC profile.

So with all monitors color corrected, I compared various images (47mb .tif files to smaller .jpg files), web pages, all of my software programs, etc. and came to the conclusion that the screen has amazing detail compared to the old Fujitsu laptop and higher resolution than the two Mitsubishi office monitors.

BUT... The tradeoff of resolution for all of the negatives just isn't worth the purchase. The resolution difference for my digital images is fantastic. But the general use of programs, reading text, the sizing of icons and VIEWING WEB PAGES all have serious negatives. Everything is just too darn small!!!!!

I spent hours today trying all of the different resolution/text font combinations and nothing solves every problem. The worst issue is the size of web pages as viewed at maximum resolution on the 9200. It is like every page was created in a minature format!!! Everything is hard to read and very small.

If you try to increase the DPI setting to compensate for the text size, then all of the web images are pixelated and look terrible.

Try showing a client your web site at your laptop with crappy pixelated images...Ain't gonna happen!!!

So now I'm going to try the 9200 with the WXGA screen to see if it meets my needs. It is worth the effort to me because everything else about this laptop is absolutely fantastic, from the construction to the sound (for a laptop) of the speaker system.

Offering my humble opinion...

Scott (photopro)
