FYI about the Sentia...

I was one of those Alienware believers …I had purchased an AW 51m for work to do video editing (this is before they came out with the Roswell m) and it worked great! So I wanted to update my own personal laptop, a Dell Inspiron 4100, P-3 1.13 GHz, 640 MB of RAM. So I decided to go with the Sentia, ordered it loaded, 2.0 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 60 Gig HD @ 7200 RPM, etc…

When I first got it I was excited , couldn’t hardly wait to use it so I started installing all my stuff, and noticed it’s slow performance right off the bat , but attributed it to all the installing I was doing, I was wrong. Now, I am comparing it’s performance to the laptop that I have used on a regular basis for the past 3 years, my old Dell…and I hate to say it but the Dell was outperforming the Sentia on everything!! The only thing that the Sentia did faster was start-up and shut-down. The wireless connection sucked so I bought a new router (802.11g) and that didn’t help (oh and I updated all the drivers and called tech support numerous times). So it had to be the wireless card, opened it up and found the antenna not even snapped on , so I put it on and didn’t improve the connection very much…it still had very slow download times and would disconnect often.

That’s not the only thing, programs froze way too often and sometimes took forever to load and I only had a few programs open when all this was happening. Video lagged when I would watch trailers from apple.com, and I didn’t even want to see what it would be like to play a DVD on it!

The keyboard is another gripe…I had problems with double letters or no letters at all, and the space-bar didn’t work unless you hit it in the center. Also I’m lucky I don’t burn my palms when typing because that thing gets extremely HOT ! Not only on the top but the bottom as well and the fan is constantly going, but it doesn’t seem to be doing anything…

Now I wanted to like this thing, I called tech support for help installed all the updated drivers etc…defragged it ran scan disk. Anything and everything I could think of that would make it run like the computer it should be, but no luck…it still is slow compared to my Dell and I was looking for something FASTER…is that too much to ask for $2800.00, I think not…

I am writing this because I was one of those buyers that came to this site and read all the reviews before making my decision and went with the assumption that only a few people complained about the system, but then I experienced all the same problems!! If you are deciding between this computer and another one, go with the other one, unless of course you really want the Alien eyes (still way cool ). So I have decided that I will be sending the thing back, it has only made me very frustrated and unproductive since the day I took it out of its box…

Day #2

Thanks for the suggestions...I have been thinking about the Dell 700m or the Sager 3790 as replacements if AW ever lets me return the Sentia...

Update (if you care):
I called up AW today and spoke with their customer service dept. and they said that I would have to pay shipping (which I expected) and a 15% restocking fee...which I didn't agree with. So they proceeded to tell me that if I spoke with a tech support guy once again that "maybe" I could send it into AW so they could figure out what could be the problem. Well I did speak with an AW tech and spoke with him for about 3 hours intermittently between him putting me on hold to find out what to do next…

First I explained my whole problem with the notebook and then he was like did you do this, did you do this…and I was like yeah the 4 other times I called into tech support!! So he proceeded to instruct me to play with the wireless card to see if this would work after that didn’t work he told me to take it out and see if that would help. Well it seemed to make a bit of a difference at the time. So now he said we’ll order you a new wireless card.

Next we proceeded to check out the keyboard…first he wanted me to type in safe-mode and regular mode then he instructed me on how to take it out (at first he was telling me how to remove it from a completely different lappy). Finally removed it and then re-plugged it back in and then typed some more to find out, to my surprise, that it still wasn’t working properly. So it was decided that a new keyboard would be sent to me…

Now mind you I have a job and I bought this lap top to make me more productive in my work but ever since I got this thing I have been anything but…if I wanted to play around with a computer and try to figure out why it isn’t working properly I would have built my own!!!

Guess what, after 3 ½ hours on the phone and getting no work done for my job the computer is still performing horribly , and now I don’t even have internet access on it. To me this is totally ridiculous, I shelled out $2800 for a working laptop, not one that I would have to repair myself…AW will be receiving another call from me tomorrow (they should pay me for the work I am doing…).

Alienware will do everything it can to get your system as it should be. I apologize if your system was not working as it should when you received it.

Just talk with our support team and also, if you want, PM me your account info and I can look into your issue.

I'd go for the Sager, the 700m is almost the exact same thing as the AW with the exception of price (cheaper) and battery life (more or less depending on which battery you get)

Day #3

I spoke with an AW customer service agent again today (12/7), and I refused to talk to tech support because I was tired of wasting time trying to resolve this computer issue myself. Instead the customer support agent spoke with the tech guys (at least that is what he was telling me) to see about approving my system to be sent in for repair. After a good while he was able to get that approved and I received by e-mail a packaging slip to send it back. I only wasted 1 hour of my life today...

Now, as anyone, I inquired about returning the system "if" when I get it back still isn't working up to par and he had to go check with his supervisor and came back and told me that I would have about a week from when I get it back to check it out and if it still isn't working they I could cancel the system with a 15% restocking fee!!! This would be totally unacceptable due to the fact that if they take it back and repair it should come back working and if it didn't then this would just plain mean that the computer sucks and they should give me my money back. The customer service agent then stated to me that if that was the case then we could probably negotiate something about the 15% restocking fee. Oh and don't let me forget to add that when I was on the phone the computer started sounding like rice krispies (snap, crackly, pop) just another thing to add to the ever growing list...!!

So in short, I am giving AW the benifit of the doubt, and will be sending it back. Now I will be without the computer for about 2 weeks...I have to say this, I have only owned Dell up to this point and the only time I ever called up Dell was when a CD-ROM drive went in my first desktop tower and they sent a guy to replace it within a week other than that I have never talked to customer support or a tech agent, the computers have worked like they where supposed to right out of the box...the question that I have been asking myself is why did I switch?? Never again will I buy an AW system, too much time spent fixing it and not enough time enjoying it...

It has been 32 days...

I guess that I am one of those people that is having a horrible time with AW...It has been 32 days since AW received my Sentia system and I still have not gotten it back from the depot!!

I know AW is always saying that we want to make our customers happy, well nothing would make me happier than to just get my hard earned money back!! Cause as of right now I am furious with the whole company and process that I am going through...I am out $2800 right now and have nothing to show for it!!!!

Anyone that is considering the Sentia I wish you luck, I have posted the entire process that I have gone through so that you are informed, I read those posts from people that stated the problems they where having and disregarded them so I hope you read mine and think twice before hitting the "order" button, I wish I did...

I feel for you man, I really do.

It seems my sentia is one of a few here that worked right out the box, but 32 days is long wait? Any idea on what is wrong or what is being done to fix your laptop?

Have you called them lately?...

Good luck to you,
DesertJester

I have called them and they said that my system was ready to ship out and if I wanted I could call back the next day and find out the tracking numbers (exactly what I wanted to do sit on the phone with them some more... ) and that was about a week ago. So I called them up today and they said that I needed to call back later to get the rest of the information...

I have spoken with AW customer service and tech support so much I have come to the conclusion that their favorite phrase is "Can I put you on hold for 2 minutes please sir...?"

But on a more serious note, They told me that the system was shipped out a while ago and they are now trying to locate the system (I guess we can blame FedEx for this little snafu)...I'm just not having any luck

That's a horrible experience..............I will never buy AW every again and I spammed it to my friends too. Try to mention the word arbitration to them....They told me the same story about the re-stocking fee and I told them I would seek the artbtration route and the Better Business Bureau and I got the restocking fee waived, hell I don't ever think I got the words of Better Business Bureau out before they said ok they would waive it.

Also keep in mind a lawyer would have a field day with this, "30-day Money Back Guarantee; In addition to the standard warranty, Alienware offers a 30-day money back guarantee on every system. If you are not satisfied with your system, you may return it within 30 days for a refund. The refund will only be issued for the amount of the sale and will not include shipping costs. All systems and parts will be subject to a 15% restocking fee."

The first thing a lawyer would ask for is a better clarification on 30-day Money back and what is subject to a re-stocking? Because they start a new sentenace saying, " The refund will only be issued for the amount of the sale and will not include shipping costs."

I used that zero payment/zero interest with the company they use, AIG. So in a sense if they were to go to arbitration they would fighting between themselves.

I just ordered my AW 7700 and am now considering cancelling. What if I by chance get a bad comp? Am I too to be stuck with a 15% restocking fee for something that does not work as advertised? I will be cancelling today and ordering the 9860 from Sager. Thanks for the input, your experience saved me from being a possible next victim.
The key word in thier own document is subject to. Which means it could or couldn't. Thier 30-day policy contradicts what they say about subject to, "30-day Money Back Guarantee; In addition to the standard warranty, Alienware offers a 30-day money back guarantee on every system. If you are not satisfied with your system, you may return it within 30 days for a refund. The refund will only be issued for the amount of the sale and will not include shipping costs.'"

Agrue those points......and stick with it through your whole process and you'll win. Trust me I did, so if they needed proof that they done it in the past just private email me.

For what it's worth, I love my alienware Sentia, and I would buy another in a heartbeat...some people do have rotton luck, but that's how life works. Don't give up on 'em because of a couple of problems with a very few people, they do build truly beautiful machines.
Guys,
It sounds like the shipping company lost the system. Let's not jump all over AW just yet.

Let us know what happens Dolphin
thats rough stuff man.
So AW does offer a 30 day money back guarantee? If so I am not cancelling my order because I do want the 7700 but I also want the security that if I get something im not happy with I can return it.
