So you're dumping dual channel?

Oh well, Try Newegg for the 9800pro.

If you want cheap, you could probobly go with a newegg Refurbish:

Refurbished Sapphire 9800pro $165

I would never suggest a Powercolour card. Ive had one and my friend's got one, never got great clocks with them, my friend's 9800XT couldnt go beyond stock by 10MHz on core AND memory even with an ATi Silencer on it and my 9800np got stuck with the worst type of memory and the core was below average on the overclocks.

So the next one i will suggest is a:

HIS Radeon 9800pro ICEQ $235

Used to be really sought after because of the cooling package because that came bundled with the card before Arctic Cooling actually started shipping it's VGA coolers. Anyway, this includes an Artic Silencer VGA Silencer. One of the best VGA aftermarket coolers money can buy. The only thing better than that cooler MAY be the ATi Silencer 1, though not by much and a custom CPU heatsink made to fit a video card.

Everything else is out of stock so...
But if you can, the Sapphire 9800pro is the best 9800pro available.

The XP-90 is in stock in SVC as well if you're in the states, i think they should have it for you by friday.

XP-90 $39.99

Anyway, MSI is a pretty decent brand, I found a rather cheap MSI i865PE chipset motherboard for you. It's $17 more expensive than your current solution. Will you buy dual channel and SATA Raid for $17?

MSI 865PE Neo2-V $73

It supports your CPU, well it should since it's a 865PE chipset, but here's the CPU support list for you just to be sure.

OK, good luck.

Wow, that MSI board looks good even though it doesn't say on newegg that it supports 400 FSB, although MSI claims it does. I think we will buy that, the XP-90, the Excalibur 9800 pro, and now 2x256 PC3200 RAM due to the dual channel support of the MB. Thanks for all your help.
no worries m8. Newegg just tried to avoid problems by saying it didnt support 400fsb because there are alot of Williamette 400fsb cores compared to Northwood 400fsb cores. So they avoid alot of incompatability problems.

Definitely, we should be ordering everything tonight/tomorrow, however, my friend just kind of changed his mind and upped his budget because he may be reconsidering the A64. We're still going to get the same video card and 2x256 of PQI RAM, and he might give me his old processor, RAM, and video card for helping him out. So, we may be building two computers. I'll definitely post pics either way.

Good deal,

anything you do, don't get anything that has P-4E lable on it. The prescotts are so hot and consume so much power that a couple of my friends are having serious trouble keeping them running in their old cases and power supplies (~350W). I have even heard stories of people having to RMA them due to serious overheating and instability. Stay away from that at all cost if you want a stable and long lasting system.
Well, prescotts are fine if you have a high end cooling system, either high end air with a good Thermalright sink, or water or better. With that, prescotts actually clock pretty high. All of them are very overclockable once you get past the heat problems.

Anyway, he's thinking of an A64 system, not a P4 system.
If you go the A64 route, I'd try to get a Socket 939 CPU, for upgradability. And also check the Latency of the PC3200 RAM to get the best bang for the buck. (The A64's performance depends greatly on the RAM its paired with.)

I am ordering these components right now from zipzoomfly.com:
Sapphire 9800 Pro - $199.99
A64 3000+ Skt939 - $152.90
MSI K8TNeo2-F - $104.00
And this RAM from newegg.com:
Pqi TURBO PC3200 256x2 - $74.00 after $10 rebate

Hopefully we'll get everything by Friday so we can build it and post pics and benchmarks.

I put it all together last night, but it won't boot. The case fan, cpu fan, and video card fan come on, and the hard drive and cd-rom drives also have power, but the LCD does not get a video signal. I am going to try different RAM today. Does anyone have an idea of what could be going wrong?

I'm assuming you mean you can't get the system to POST, not boot. Are you hearing any beep codes? Did your mainboard come with an onboard video card?

Yeah, sorry, I meant POST. There are 3 short beeps a pause, 3 more short beeps, pause...and so on. And no, the mainboard did not come with an onboard video card.

Thanks, we got it working..I put in a 512 MB stick of Kingmax RAM and it posted just fine. I don't know why the Pqi RAM won't work..it works in my Athlon XP machine just fine..

Make sure you are using 1 of the 3 DIMM Module Combinations that work for Dual Channel Memory on your mobo according to its specs. I looked up the detailed specs and it has a table that lists the accepted combinations for Dual Channel DDR. (Since your PQI RAM is Dual Channel DDR.)

http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p...eo2-F&class=mb

The Dual Channel Combinations are shown in the first table on that page.
yea, losing dual channel in an intel rig is really bad. Intel P4's gobble up RAM bandwith. Anyway, if none of the DIMM slot configs work, then u gotta RMA the board. Then Benchies, Benchies Benchies, piccys, piccs piccys!!!!

You should be able to look at the pics now..I'll try to get over to his house and run some benchmarks, but he may not let me use it for a day or two because he just bought HL2..
