5500 V. 7700....help!

The sweet smell of new computer will soon dawn on my nostrils (mad scientist laugh), but a few burning questions still remain!

I know that pci-express is the coolest thing since sliced bread but will it be the future for systems..ergo will getting the 7700 a more sounder choice rather than the standard AW area-51m 5500 model. Keeping in mind that im getting this system to last me years and staying on top and upgrading to better components is something that is always on the back on my mind. Reading from the threads ive seen post the demise of the 5500 (in terms of upgradability etc)
but i like the fact that 5500 is a smaller more manuverable machine w/ ok batterylife as opposed to the 7700's constant power mongering making it a cumbersome companion to school, trips etc. but besides this extended introduction and thesis to a dumb question...If i buy the laptop..this will be a desktop replacement, but also it needs to be portable so that i can take it to school-please help me with this dilema, either a 5500 or 7700

5500 vs 7700

"I know that pci-express is the coolest thing since sliced bread but will it be the future for systems"

Yes pci-e is the future, they are phasing out agp like they did the standard pci graphic slots in mobo's. but they like the current few selections of pci graphic cards will be around for awhile.

"Keeping in mind that im getting this system to last me years "

well if you plan to keep a laptop for a few years without a major purchase for a new laptop. the 7700 will suffice. it should support future games for awhile.

the 7700 and all the other new Clevo clone systems that are coming out are mobile desktop they are the closest thing to a performace desktop to date. with all that you get ya your battery life is gonna be short.... very short. THESE systems are designed to be plugged into a power source and NOT run off battery.

So if your looking for the best performance laptops to date, you fairly fit with good shoulder strengh, and have a power source to plug these beasts into at school or where ever your going. this is the system for you...if not

I would probably look for a high end Centrino laptop.

It is something that you have to decide for yourself. The 7700 is a vary nice DTR but is freaking huge but the 5500 is no light weight either and a lot of people will tell you that it is not all that portable myself included. I for one have two laptops one for LAN parties and one for work on the go although this year I have not been on the go that much nor have I gone to many LAN parties. But if I were to get a DTR today I would get the 7700 because if how upgradeable it is and it is not that much bigger than the 5500 but like I said you have to be the one that makes the choice. Nether one is all that one is all that portable.

same problem

I'm also struggling with this same problem. I just don't want a 17" beast of a laptop. I want to actually be able to carry this around and use it on a plane. Anybody ever tried to use a 17" laptop in coach plane seats?!? Unfortunately, the only machines right now that have PCI-Express also only have 17" displays. The sad truth is that PCIe (nor AGP 8x,4x,2x) just does not (by itself) making much difference in benchmarks - the gpu/memory has more to do with performance than anything else. Yet, to get the newest GPU you're stuck getting whatever the latest-greatest bus interface. I don't blame the vendors, I get upset at chipset makers and these ridiculous 'forced-down-the-throat' upgrades that do little but cut off upgrade paths.

I've decided to check out of the upgrade game until at least Q1 or Q2 of next year until this mess settles down. I buy machines that will last me 2-3 years, and will wait until I find one I like before putting money down. So, I will buy whoever comes up with a human-sized (15") laptop with a gForce6800/ati x800 good graphics card. I would buy a 15" 5500m in a heartbeat if they had the gf6800 or x800 in it. Until then, I have a 3 year old laptop and it still plays CounterStrike just fine and will keep waiting. I hope our laptop makers are listening...

AMD and Intel have new lappy setups coming soon, both of which support PCI-E, if you can wait until march or maybe april you can get a nice thin lappy (well lighter than the 5500) with PCI-E

-But doesnt the EE run a little hot than norm p4s (well i know it does) But hot enough to cause harm to the mobo?

sigh, the 6800go with a non EE processor would be faster than a 3.2ghz EE with a MR9700

two words, desktop replacement.

DESKTOP REPLACEMENT.

D E S K T O P
R E P L A C E M E N T

it replace the desktop. meaning that its not supposed to be on your lap, like a laptop, its not supposed to be thin and light, like a thin n light, its not supposed to have high battery life. IT IS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE THE DESKTOP.
