How does your 700m run?
Any problems?? Anything you dislike about it? Anything you really like about it?? I just want to get a feel for how many people are satisfied with their 700m.

thanks!

i keep hearing this 7k60, is it like a super hard drive that's really good for laptops or somethin??

do u recommend i should get one?

I love my 700m. The keyboard takes some getting used to, but it's nice and small. It's easy to add a faster hard drive and more memory. (Right now I have the stock HD and 256 MB and it runs XP fine.) I get about 4.5 hours from the battery while really using the laptop and the screen is great for watching DVDs if you travel on the plane/train/bus.

It's a great laptop if you're not looking for a gaming machine. It's something I can easily carry down to a Starbucks and surf/chat/watch a DVD and not have much to worry about.

the 7k60 is the fastest hard drive for laptops right now
it was extremely easy to install into the 700m and was worth the money
just make sure you have the drivers for the machine on a cd before changing hard drives

Great laptop, very happy with it. Excellent build quality. I was pleased to see that Dell used a Synaptics touchpad on it. For some reason I thought it was going to be an ALPS.

Complaints: 1) It gets fairly warm (on the bottom) under normal use. 2) Fair speakers 3) No dedicated hardware volume keys. None of these are a deal breaker though.

people are over inflating this 7k60 crap....well maybe if your 700m came with a 20GB 4200rpm HD and you got it with 256MB Ram. anyways, i'm not jumpin on the 60GB 7200rpm until they make at least an 80GB HD for me to think it will be worthwhile to buy a new HD over my 40GB 5400. for the time being, depends on your use, buy 1GB ram first, then if you think you need a 60GB HD 7200rpm then get that. your biggest boost is going to be from upping your ram first. it don't do no good to have a 7200rpm if you are still trying to make windows xp work on only 256MB ram. plus if you are gaming, surfing, photoing, you are using ram anyways (yes your graphics card uses 64mb of your ram...so where do you think your biggest boost is coming from? that's right ram).

my whole family is getting 700m. my wife's work is giving 700m's for their salespeople who are travelling. ok, it ain't the best thing since slice bread, but it's better than a three dimensional donut without taste (yeah, that's a bagel). plus, it's a chic magnet...chics come up to me and say....oooooooooh. i presume that is because so many freakin people have an apple that it ain't different anymore.

just can't say enough that you need to get the thing with at least 512MB ram. god it's so darn slow with 256MB running windows xp. also, reconfigure your boot.ini file by putting startup delay to 0 rather than the default 30.

no dedicated hardware volume? just press fn+F5, F6 or F7, dont' know how difficult that is.

speakes rather blow chunks, but if you are planning on using it for HT, then that would be rather silly to use any laptop speakers for HT...get headphones like the rest of the world, and you'll be fine...do people actually use their laptop speakers? i'm mostly using my lappie in coffee shops etc, and it ain't conducive to lappie speaker use anyways.

heat? it's warm but not as warm as my previous lappies. probably b/c i'm using low heat ram (ok, i'm getting a bit ram centric) and speedswitchxp on battery optimize. if you are punching max performance on ac, it gets a little warmer, but nothing that is distracting to keep on your lap for hours on end, which i do. with that said, that stupid fan intake on the bottom is just a stupid ass design..i'm thinking if one of these days, my clothes or blanket is gonna get sucked up into it and fry the fan...on hard surfaces you don't have a problem.

and as everyone will contest, get the 8 cell.

lol , alright, i understand i need my RAM ! haha thx man!!
it seems like a really good pc just for educational or business use and a couple dvds here or there...

it plays dvd's fine...games are the weak point. if you're a gamer, then i'd suggest getting a gaming computer. isn't that how the computer world is really divided up into anyways?

He asked what we liked and what we disliked. Remember?

I didn't say it was difficult to use the function keys, now did I? Dedicated hardware buttons are much nicer, especially in the dark.

The 700m might be cooler than your last laptop, but it's much warmer than my last (m505x).

I never said I was using the speakers for HT.

wasn't arguing with you..i was making my observations on the same issues you posted: crappy speakers, but..., no volume piece, but...heat generation, but...design, but... i was merely putting out there ways around certain things,to give the question asker a better conceptualization on the function of the 700m. if for example he thought that the only way to adjust the volume was through the speaker icon, because there is no external volume button, that would be misleading since you can do it via keyboard keys that have icon stickers on them. etc, etc. i also posted the same thing about the cdrom eject button which i had read reviews that suggested it was problematic and i wonder why they said it was difficult since you could just use fn+f10 to eject it. anyways, tomato, tomato..

with that, i also dislike that fact there aren't any swapable accessories yet for the media bay. but i love this thing. hell it survived a grande latte spill

well i was looking at the specs between the 600m and the 700m and i was just wondering why one wouldn't buy the 600m over the 700m??

i mean the 600m has a graphics card, nearly equal or better performance, plus a larger screensize...close to 700m weight (including the upgraded batter) and less thickness. they all seem like huge pluses but i still can't grasp why 700m is so much more popular than the 600m~
post #14 of 65
bc the 700m is more portable, thats the only reason i bought it. i wanted the smallest screen possible that i could handle with my eyes. 700m is the best out there that i found and really liked
post #15 of 65
i personally think the 700m is just built better than the 600m. fells more solid (there are 7, yes 7 screws holding down the lcd bezel). just bought my mommie a 600m b/c i figured the little bigger screen would be better for her needs for showing photos to her clients. it is a bit perplexing why the 600m is thinner than the 700m, though.

i agree as above that it's lighter, 1 pound is a pound after all. it's smaller. i like the screen better.

oh, and there is always that it's new, and for gadgety people (like me) that's always a plus.

I'm very pleased with my 700m, the build quality is much better than my Inspiron 1100.

The speed is great but I also have a 7K60. I'd recommend this upgrade, I've never heard a single person who bought one say that it wasn't a worthwhile upgrade.

The screen on the 700m is absolutely the best I've seen on a laptop or even a desktop LCD. I was just viewing some movies I made over the weekend on an external LCD monitor and they looked so much crisper on the 700m's screen.

no real problems with the machine, the speakers could be better but they are on par with most other laptop speakers. My thumb tends to hit the touchpad when I'm typing and this makes the cursor jump around, no big deal though.

The 700m also has a sd card slot and a firewire port, both of which the 600m do not have. I was deciding between the two and that was a big influence.

could the 700m support the memory cards for sony digital cameras?

only if you get sony memory stick card reader or multi-card reader connecting through your PMCIA slot or via usb or firewire. the SD card slot is only for SD (and others have reported MMC compatibility as well), but not any other memory media format (i.e. sony, CF, SM). multi-card readers connecting by USB are really cheap these days
