my whole family is getting 700m. my wife's work is giving 700m's for their salespeople who are travelling. ok, it ain't the best thing since slice bread, but it's better than a three dimensional donut without taste (yeah, that's a bagel). plus, it's a chic magnet...chics come up to me and say....oooooooooh. i presume that is because so many freakin people have an apple that it ain't different anymore.

just can't say enough that you need to get the thing with at least 512MB ram. god it's so darn slow with 256MB running windows xp. also, reconfigure your boot.ini file by putting startup delay to 0 rather than the default 30.

no dedicated hardware volume? just press fn+F5, F6 or F7, dont' know how difficult that is.

speakes rather blow chunks, but if you are planning on using it for HT, then that would be rather silly to use any laptop speakers for HT...get headphones like the rest of the world, and you'll be fine...do people actually use their laptop speakers? i'm mostly using my lappie in coffee shops etc, and it ain't conducive to lappie speaker use anyways.

heat? it's warm but not as warm as my previous lappies. probably b/c i'm using low heat ram (ok, i'm getting a bit ram centric) and speedswitchxp on battery optimize. if you are punching max performance on ac, it gets a little warmer, but nothing that is distracting to keep on your lap for hours on end, which i do. with that said, that stupid fan intake on the bottom is just a stupid ass design..i'm thinking if one of these days, my clothes or blanket is gonna get sucked up into it and fry the fan...on hard surfaces you don't have a problem.

and as everyone will contest, get the 8 cell.

right on.. except the mouse buttons seem flimsy.. thats my only complaint.. theres a fix somewhere on here with some tape or something

I say POOWIE ON THE REST !

if you don't want to deal with the mouse keys, just use the touchpad. i agree, they feel abit cheapish. i either use the touchpad or most of the time my wireless mini opti mouse

Had mine for about a little over 8 weeks and still works Fantastic!

Hey all, I'm a new user on these boards. From what I can see it's a happening place.

Glad to report I'm loving my 700m. It's light and portable for carrying it around at school. I've only had it for about a week, but I'm already in love with it. Great wireless performance as well and the laptop is just overall speedy. About games...games I've tried and have had a good deal of success with so far are Jedi Outcast, Call of Duty, Diablo 2, and Warcraft III. So it can handle some of the games of yesteryear...just nothing next gen.

I love how this lappie's so freaking quiet...a world of difference from my last notebook whose fan would kick in intermittently for no reason and blow papers off other people's desks during lectures. quite annoying.

my only real gripe with the 700m has to be the mouse buttons..at first i didn't care much for them, seeing as how I knew I'd be using the touchpad...but anytime I type those flimsy buttons jitter and vibrate against the chassis. but it's a minor thing...something i'm sure scotch tape could solve...just wish dell could've made those buttons stick in place.

hmmm, i'm not having any problems with my mouse keys. if they are that bad, call dell to replace them.

i'm also using a portable mini wireless optical, b/c i like the scroll wheel, more than i use the touchpad or mouse keys. that may be another reason why i'm not having problems either. simply less use

ok, i love my 700m but here's my list of complaints

touchpad keys - right one is noticeably lower than left. bad quality control

lack of internal bluetooth - not that big a deal, but i wish i could sync with my cell phone and use a bluetooth mouse without needing a dongle

i hate how the battery sticks out - both the extended and standard battery project out the back. it's ugly and ungainly

SD should be bootable - hopefully a future BIOS fix

CD tray is flimsy - i'm always afraid i'm gonna break it. think i might look into a slot loading one

i really do love this laptop tho, but those are my complaints

My right touchpad key is also lower. I just assumed it was isolated to mine or a few mistakes, it is odd to hear that yours is also. but no big deal.
I love the laptop though

it's really a minor thing...
the mouse buttons on my 700m don't jitter bad enough to warrant a replace i think...in fact, they're not jittering as I type...you can only hear it sometimes. as long as I don't touch them they stay in place haha...

i just realized mouse buttons on a laptop are so useless....

Really I personally don't care about the touchpad buttons as I bought a Logitech V500 mainly for making scollling easier and as a bonus it has left and right scrolling for those wide Excel screens!

Only conplaint about the V500 is having the style of scroll (like a touchpad), it doesn't have a middle click button for opening tabs in FireFox. Only a minor thing as you can right click and do the same thing! Otherwise fantastic.

As someone mentioned above be good if the 700m came with bluetooth so I wouldn't need this little dongle for the 700m.

BTW Love the screen and my desktop 19" Hitachi monitor, what I thought was brilliant now looks way blurry in comparison to the 700m.

WOW does watching DVD's look awesome or what?

Cheers Chook

I agree bluetooth would have been nice on the 700m. I'm still holding out for a combo Wireless B/G and bluetooth mini PCI card. If bluetooth ever takes off I'm sure someone will come out with one.
feel likes bluetooth HAS already taken off.
bluetooth hasn't taken off...look how long it's been around and how little support it has gotten. case in point, where are the combo bluetooth 802.11 combo mini-pci cards that were supposed to be coming out? anyways, hopefully someone big will come out with one soon, and that would solve all those problems.

Got my 700m few hours ago.

Here is my rant:

1.I think the battery is move if you press it. Will it hold?
2.The LCD maker is UO Optronics. Is it good or bad?

Here some good point:
1.I got the Hitachi 5400rpm 8MB hardisk

That's all I can think of now. Please help!!!

I received my 1.8Ghz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, DVDRW, 700M yesterday.

Here's my take:

Upgrading to XP Pro was a PITA. I had to integrate SP2 to my XP Pro install disc since I was using an older version of XP Pro over the XP Home installed on my 700M by Dell. Next, I had to download updates to my Nero 6 Burning Rom since it wouldn't run on SP2.

Besides the setting up of the computer which took all night, the 700M runs great. The wireless network connection runs smoothly.

Two items IMO that make the computer look CHEAP, is the ugly white outline surrounding the notebook and the protusion of the battery. Hopefully, when Dell releases a new verson of the 700M these items will be revised.

Any difference in upgrading RAM?

First of all, the only problem I've had with my 700m occured quite recently. When I wake away from it after its gone into standby, the touchpad doesn't seem to wake up with the rest of the system. The keyboard works, but the touchpad needs a system reboot. Anybody know of a fix for this?

Anyway, future upgrades for me include the new Seagate 7200RPM hard drive whenever that comes out. The 7K60 sounds good, but I'll wait for the next product.

Another question: I currently have 512MB ram. HOw much of a difference would adding another 256 or 512MB make? I see someone in here have 2GB? Is that necessary?

ANyway, cheers!

Just received my 700m a few days ago, wiped out Home and slapped on XP Pro without any problems. Bummer that Server 2003 doesn't work, I'd love to set it up to dual-boot so I could use it to test out things. Oh well.

So far I'm in love. I cannot for the life of me understand why anybody would want one of those BEHEMOTH sized laptops out there, holy crap some of them are huge. Those 17-inchers aren't portable! Just give in and get a desktop!

My one frustration was a wickedly annoying persistant numlock that always, always turned itself back on all the time, over and over for no reason. I finally figured out the registry key for this one, since then no problems! I love being able to stream xvids off my server wirelessly to the TV now.

I'm ready to slit my wrists and spray my boiling blood all over this thing. Goddamn numlock just came on again.

Sigh. The joys of technology.

My experience

I'm loving mine so far. The screen is absolutely beautiful, and the performance is beyond my expectations. I was afraid of the small screen at first, and somewhat skeptical of the subtracted dimensions of the keyboard, but after a few days of use, I've adjusted just fine. Also, unlike many users of this laptop, I do work on it and also game. It handles everything work related, and I've been playing the following games so far: World of Warcraft, Icewind Dale 2, Civilizations 3, Call of Duty, Halo. Sure, it's obviously not a gaming laptop, but I've been pleasently suprised by some of the titles that it can play reasonably well. Anyway, movies look excellent, the 8 cell battery life is great, and the laptop is extremely light and portable. Unlike most who complain about the 8 cell battery protrusion from the back, I sort of like it due to the fact that it provides a nice grip for my hand as I'm supporting it from beneath and carrying it around.

My only gripes so far:

I might have preferred a 13.x inch screen. Sure, some might say that there is no practical or significantly observeable difference, but I would be willing to bet that there would be. 12 inches is probably the minimum that I could adequately work with on a laptop. I've gotten used to it, but I would shudder to think about going smaller.

Mouse buttons are a bit on the loose side and feel somewhat cheap.

The Hitachi 60 gb drive that comes with the laptop does click somewhat though it's not bad enough for me to call technical support or switch it out. It's hard to explain. I don't always notice it, but sometimes I do. It's not a big deal to me yet, but I can see how it might be to some people.

I wish the monitor natively supported other widescreen resolutions other than 1280x800

The dvd-rom/cdrw drive doesn't read all of your custom burned cd's or software, although it doesn't seem to have a problem with retail cd's. I've had a few cd's burned with various brands of cd's that I bought, that the drive has been unable to properly read.

That's about it. Generally, I've been extremely happy with my purchase. My specs: 1.8 ghz, 60gb 5400rpm hitachi drive, 1gb ram.

I also bought an external housing for my 250gb western digital hard drive, and have been plugging it into my firewire port to slave as an extra hard drive. So far, it has worked great for storage purposes.
