Best Linux Distro - Page 2

I like distros based on Debian. My favorite is Libranet. No bloat at all. But fast and stable.

I don't know about hacking and stuff, but my personal fav is suse. It's the easiest to use from the get go in my opinion. And it has a built in ntfs partition resizer, that does it automatically when you install (a definate plus). The only prob I'm having with it is the max resolution the desktop will let me be at is 800x600, but I've been told by other people it supports 1400+ resolutions

I downloaded and tried out Gentoo, absolutely amazing! I think I have found my new favorite distro. I use PHLAK for the computers at school. Thanks for all your help.

i have suse 9.1 pro right now, but i don't really recomend it. i got into linux because i wanted something more stable than windows. suse is pretty full featured and easy to use, but it's not as stable as i'd hoped. i wanted there to be no crashes or freezing at all, but i'm sad to say that sometimes it does crash (albeit saving all the work i had completed without me having to save it manually) and it does freeze when i start multitasking (over 3 processes at once). right now i'm downloading fc3, hope that it'll be better than suse.

Mepis is awesome...very minimal install and a super great package manager to get anything you could possibly want afterwards. It even deals with dependancies

Isn't MEPIS based on Debian? Does it still use apt/dpkg or does it have its own package manager?

It is based on Debian and uses apt. It comes with Kpackage and alternate package management GUI.

Thanks for the quick reply. Kpackage is pretty sweet, just took a look at its home page.

You don't even have to bother searching for the sources and dependencies, just download vectorlinux, has the absolute easiest install of any slackware based distros plus is fairly small in size.
