I guess you guys didn't notice the GB ethernet on the 8790. Whats the matter with you guys? GB ethernet is the ****!! I work for a local broadband affiliate and we just switched out all of our workstations for dell's w/ gb ethernet. I rip a dvd in 5 min, encode it in 40, and transfer the avi in 3. Untill now the only laptop w/ gb ethernet has been the apple powerbook series. Wake up and recognize innovation people. My only issue now is that card had better work under Linux or I'm pissed. I need to have nmap, nessus, ssh etc...
Well thats all fine and dandy, but it doesn't help if your existing lan is based on 100mbps equipment. Really though, there is no point in having gigabit on all workstations. I see it as a backbone thing, from switch to switch for instance between departments in a building. No single user will ever come close to maxing gigabit at this time, the transfer rate of a large file is still bottlenecked by the hard drive. Given work environment with poorly optimized systems, even 100mbps is faster than the hard drive bottleneck.
And again, if you use cable or DSL, that is your main bottleneck. Gigabit is really overhyped IMO.
