Will the Sony T series be a good choice for me?

Hi,

I spent the better half of today reading through many notebook suggestions, and saw that the Asus M6BNE and Uniwill 259IA3 were pretty popular choices. Currently, I landed a new job doing MIS work, and they are going to buy me a new laptop. I will be expected to carry it all the time, and thought the new Sony T Series would be a good choice, because of it's long battery life and very compact size. Do you guys think this is a good choice for me?

I thought about the Uniwill 259IA3; but after reading the Sticky here, I realized that having a very powerful notebook would hurt weight + battery life and had to re-think my options.

Please help... I need to tell my boss what I want by tomorrow.

Thanks,

Eddie

I really like the Uniwill 259IA3. It is pretty portable, has good power and a great gpu. It is a great balance of work and play, something I think you could take advantage of in a technology oriented job. It is bigger than the Sony, so if portability is your main concern I would stick with an Ultra Light, i.e Sony T, Panasonic Toughbook etc.

Dont forget Fujitsu, who makes excellent ultraportables, as well as IBM, with their X31/X40.

Yes, the Fujitsu's are very nice. The IBM X series is another great laptop. I got to use one at a convention and I was very impressed with the power and feel of such a small laptop.

This site gives you a chance to get laptops only seen in the Japanese/Asia market, for a price.

Very cool site. The Sony U71/U50 is a very interesting palmtop. Hopefully this tech catches on, so they get cheap and we can all own one.

i went with the s series over the t.. in the same line of work as you..

the t is just too small for me.. the s is the sweet spot for size.. it weighs nothingand you can get your company to spring for the extended battery.. just my $1.43

But won't the sheer power of the Uniwill say if I got one at 2ghz, 2gig ram and so on, kill the battery in an hour or two? That's what concerns me the most.

The S Series from Fujitsu is very good. I haven't had first hand experience with these, but from the many reviews for these notebooks, they make very capable, well built portables. Link to their laptop section - Fujitsu Notebooks

How did you customize yours? RADEON 9700 or 9200, processor, RAM, and all that good stuff? Will how much will this affect battery life?

Unless you are playing demanding games, or watching movies, this laptop should last you 3+ hrs (w/WiFi on).

What kind of battery life are you looking to get out of your laptop? What size and weight are you looking for?

Well the Sony T Series says battery life is 8.5 hours and the S at 6.5 hours. And, I'm looking for a wide screen model that is ultra portable but with an internal DVD-RW drive bay. I guess what I'm confused about is how battery life compares at a machine at 1.1ghz with 512RAM compares to a 2ghz with 1g or 2g RAM with a gaming GPU, when I'm not playing games or playing DVDs. In otherwords, if I'm just doing office applications or if I left both notebooks on and did nothing, how much faster would the higher spec notebook die in comparison to the lower spec.

I would say the T series wil outlast the S series, for the shear fact of the size difference. The larger screen and component size will take away from the battery life of the S.

If the above is your only concern, the T series is a great option, giving you a very light notebook with a supposed 8+ hrs of battery life. Companies always inflat their supposed battery times, so I would like to see real world tests on this unit, specifically using the dvd burner often during the test.

The DVD drive (when burning or watching a movie) takes up a good portion of the battery, so you may see close to a 35-50% drop in the battery life.

i wouldn't assuem that the t is going to last longer, despite being smaller with lesser components.. that also means the battery si smaller.

as far as my s260 i just got the standard strore bought one.. as i adidnt' want to order a custom one in case i didnt' like it.. the standard batt is about 4.5 hrs.. radeon 9200 but if you are looking at a t, wthe graphics shouldn't concern you.> I find it annoying that the s takes a microdimm.. as i have a 1 gig sodimm at my house.. that chaps me.
