Need some advise (wireless card noob)

Hey, I'm looking at wireless cards and honestly I'm puzzled. Do I want an a+g card, just g, b is old but still used..

Would someone make some suggestions on what card/manufacture I should get? I'm moving in with some friends and we're going to split the cost of cable, and since I have my 51m, I suggested getting a wireless router so I can walk around and make fun of them while they sit in their rooms.. I don't have it yet and wont be moving for a couple months, but I'd like to get a card first and use it at a local coffee shop and see how I like the transfer rate and all that.. maybe play around with wardriving in my neighborhood?? Any suggestions and info would be appreciated. I have the 5500 model, stats in sig. I would be using it for file swap and gaming..

Thanks in advance guys

Edit#1: looking at this Link or Link $50 is about my price range..

Many coffee shop hotspots are 802.11b only; I would imagine that you would want a b+g card at the very least, as you probably want the 54 Mbps capability when on your home network (e.g. to do file transfers between you and your friends machines.).

FWIW, some folks have had trouble with the Linksys 54g card you have listed on their A-51m's; I would suggest a different manufacturer (e.g. Netgear, D-Link).

No direct experience with any PCMCIA cards and the A-51m (I went internal mini-PCI). Both look reasonable.

However, I would recommend that whatever brand you choose for your card, you get the same brand wireless router/WAP - that way, they can't point the finger at someone else if there's a comm problem.... and with that in mind, you might want to choose the router.

Hopefully someone else will lend an opinion on these cards...

I know you aren't looking for the router yet, but if you want to go ahead and get it, my fiancee and I got this one for our apartment. Works fantastic, and its both b and g compliant.

Hopefully, but I do appreciate your comments. I am hoping to go out and get one today (card) after I leave work, so any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a Linksys A + G card and router and I have had mo problems with it what so ever. I also only use the A ban because most war drivers have G/B. Make sure you enable WEP “152 bit” and change the router user name and password form the one that came with it. And never name your home network HOME or DOMAIN name it something like HACKERSUCK.

yea set the SSID to slacker.NET or something. :-)

My setup:
Router - SMC2804WBRP-G 802.11g
Sentia - Intel 2100 802.11b
Misc - SMC2835w 802.11g wireless PCMCIA (used for laptops that I bring home to fix)

I prefer 2.4ghz 802.11b&g over the 5ghz 802.11a because of signal range. 5ghz does not get past walls as well. Some will say that 2.4gz band is congested and is prone to interference from other wireless devices such as cordless phones. I encountered a problem with my phone interfering, but a change in channel on the router takes care of that.

I bought the Extreme G D-Link wireless PCMCIA card and router for my Area-51m and I'm very happy with them.. does both b and g but when used with my Extreme G router does 108 instead of 54 with very good range.. like 2 houses down the street still getting full strength signal. whooyah!
