Combo:
DVDShrink: http://www.dvdshrink.org/
Nero 6: http://www.nero.com/
The theory should be legal because you are supposed to be allowed to create a backup copy of your software (dvd) , but the DMCA laws concerning it are fuzzy..
DVD Shrink is free and legal, Nero isn't free though (obviously
) Those two programs fit hand and glove (cuz the same software developer for Nero made DVDShrink according to some articles I've read about DVDShrink)

Umm... I'm not sure actually I don't know if that's a complete Nero package that can burn video DVDs bundled or not... DVDShrink creates it as an ISO (in fact gives you the option to even go straight from DVDShrink to Nero
) so it should be fine.
I mentioned the Nero though (and gave the link for those who don't have the software
) because DVDShrink by itself doesn't have a burning engine.

I belive most if not all DVDs are copy protected and need to be "decrypted" before you can make a copy. I use DVD Decrypter and then DVD Shrink to scale down the oriiginal so it will fit on a single layer blank DVD. Within DVD Shrink there is an option to create an ISO and burn with the DVD Decrypter native burning software. The best part about this is both apps are free. So far I have copied about 2 dozen DVDs with no problems. A typical DVD of 2 hours takes about 40 minutes to copy. To my surprise the copies will even play on my nealy 4 year old Toshiba player.

picking up the nero burner underneath without me knowing it. Not trying to dispute your words, but just wondering.
Thanks for all your knowledge, Anaconda.

DO NOT get DVDXCOPY its a peice of shit! it adds a bunch of crap onto your dvd makeing your quality
even worse, same with DVD2COPY, DVD2COPY adds some stupid message when your throw in your dvd
telling you thats its a backup, (why the hell do i need to be reminded that its a backup if its on a
burned DVD? lol)
dont let those stupid fbi warnings stop you from backing up your OWN LEGAL STORE BOUGHT DVDs. you
have the right to make as make copies as you want for personal use. just dont sell your copies
NOW in order to get a good copy of your movie without all the fbi BS and P-UOP (prohibited user
operations = when you try clicking menu it wont let you go, i hate this BS personally) and also
macrovision protection (you cannot copy the dvd using a dvd player to a vcr etc)
DVD Decrypter = this program is FREE (legaly free to use) it can rip any dvd, doesn't matter the
protection it has cuz the CSS protection on DVDs is a joke anyways
with dvd decrypter RIP the dvd to your HDD, it makes a 1:1 copy on your HDD and removes all the
macrovision BS and CSS protection, the copy is unencrypted
VOB BLANKER = Free again! leagaly, use this to remove stupid FBI warnings and other stuff you really
didnt ask for when paying for your DVD. open the dvd backup on HDD using this utility, click on
blank at the top and then Auto T, this will remove the useless extras on the DVD as well as anoying
stuff makeing the movie itself higher quality (dvds are usually ~9GB you can only burn 4.3GB on a
DVD±R SL) it is best to blank to another HDD on another IDE/SATA/SCSI ch, it goes WAY faster
DVD SHRINK = FREE! (too good to be true) this utility can reencode a dvd in lower quality to reduce
the total size, after blanking run DVD shrink, open up the blanked DVD image on your 2nd drive,
select if you want to keep subtitles and other lang the dvd has to offer. click on menu, change the
menu down to approx 55%-60% (you wont notice the diffrence really). doing this will make your main
movie go up in quality, you can get around 70-90% of the original quality of the dvd. when you are
ready hit backup, and back the blanked image up to your 1st HDD where the original 1:1 copy is. once
backed up burn with any program. nero works good. all you are doing is just burning a bunch of files
onto a DVD so it doesn't matter if you are using + or - R media, it burns it as a DVDROM so all
players can read it.

| DVDShrink can burn a DVD with no further action as long as you have Nero installed on your system. It uses the Nero engine even though Nero never physically opens. |

| (Psst hint the Nero burning engine and DVDShrink are programmed by the same guy. so they seamlessly integrate ) |
I have learned something today. I feel a little smarter. Today is not a total loss.

i use dvdshrink. but since they are no longer releasing updates for it and sony came out with new encryption that shrink will not crack I also run a program called "Anydvd" all you do is open it up and run dvdshrink and it cracks the encryption on the fly so dvdshrink actually runs faster for me
