What, no more iXPS Gen2 hype?

I've been reading the rumors for months now but over the past few weeks, it seems everyone's gone quite. At this point, I'm guessing we won't see it in time for the holidays...what gives?

I've thought about this for a while (since I often have nothing better to do) and I've narrowed it down to basically 2 possibilities. If the iXPS Gen2 is going to appear before christmas, it's going to be much like the Sager 9860 because I know it's PCI-Express. Although I bet on that a lot before, one guy posted here that when he returned a Dell laptop, he asked about the iXPS Gen2 and learned it had a 17-in screen and a Pentium M. He made sure the Dell rep on the other end wasn't getting it confused with the 9200, and she said she knew what she was talking about. So, since I know it's PCI-Express, then that means it could be Dell's first laptop based on the Alviso/Sonoma platform, which would be awsome. The catch with that- Intel isn't shipping the 915PM chipset (that would be used in Alviso/Sonoma chipsets) in volume until January 17th. As you can see, that would put the iXPS Gen2 on the market some time in late January. Personally, I think that the pentium M and the 915pm chipset is much better than the desktop parts found in previous XPS and 9100 systems. A 2.13ghz dothan with a 533mhz bus speed is going to be real fast, give you good battery life, and lighten up that XPS laptop a bit.

I went to a Dell lunch today and asked one of their engineers about this laptop. He didnt have enough info to give me any concrete answer. So the actual specs may still be in the air.

maybe they're going to come out with it when the mobile x800 part is readily available and maybe they are positioning themselves to get a mobile 925xe mobo so it can run the 1066fsb instead of the 800 for the mobile915s... if they are waiting for the pentium m pcie part, that'd be cool too since it'll help balance the battery life if when they put a power house graphic card in it.

the hype is gone for now since ATi already announced the MRX800 part and no word from dell on it in a system...

If they would just release an AGP version of the mobile x800 or 6800 Go I would be happy

you should be good enough with the mr9800, it plays everything well doesn't it? It doesn't get better benchmark numbers, but gameplay is great and it's still as fast if not faster than many desktops out there gamers have. yes there are those super systems with $500 graphic cards and thousand dollar cpus, but those should be considered super luxury items IMO. my mr9800 does the job well for me and i got mine at half the price of these newer 6800go systems so i'm good with what i got for the next couple of years... i'll probably end up upgrading when 64 bit dual core desktops come out and the next major OS update.

Heh, poor icspeedracer. I can tell he's trying to convince himself that his system is fast enough. J/K. Some people, like myself, can't part with their GeForce 6800 on their desktop, so we wait until a laptop that's quick enough comes out. Personally, I hope the laptop has a Pentium M and it makes more sense that way- according to the inquirer (I think), all Dell laptops will be Pentium M's by next march. Probably a good move. Just gotta go back to the waiting game.

yep i'm poor alright...f'ing law school is gonna cost a lot!!! ne ways, i just say its fast enough because i don't have a gaming desktop and my last laptop was a dell 5000e that had a 750mhz PIII and a 16mb radeon from back in 2000. Also i've been doing a lot of my gaming on my consoles since my comps haven't been powerful enough until now to play something good. i wish i could afford one of the new sli systems comming out with a amd fx 55, but i can't unless i find a nice paying job in march after i graduate so i can make some quick cash before school starts up in the fall again...

those with the new desktop gfx cards: is it worth getting them now or waiting til the next gen after to take advantage of the whole pcie thing?

I wouldn't believe everything you read on a msg board. You really think somebody as low as a customer service rep is going to have information like this? If the thousands of CS reps did have knowledge like this, you would bet that somebody would have leaked some information.

Lol.......

I was thinking the same thing. The people with all the inside info on this site have went quite!

Yeah lemme find it.... Here it is:

And of course I'm not naive enough to believe that 100%, because it seems more logical to me if Dell released a 9860-ish laptop, though that kinda conflicts with the news I heard about Dell's entire laptop being Pentium M by next March.

well with as much $$$ as dell has made with the XPS/9100, they may not be worrying for a while.

You are correct! And the month THEY said that the iXPS Gen2 was to be released is spelled November.

on the other hand who would need a xps2 anyways 9100/xps does everything we need rights?
until something better comes out one thing you will say about the new xps is "what the f--------???"

I don't have a laptop yet- why buy an AGP laptop right now only to see a few weeks later that I could have spent the same amount of money on a geForce 6800 Go or x800 mobility? Anyone getting an XPS now is going to be VERY disappointed when the new XPS comes out by the time they actually get it delivered (at least that's what would happen to me with my luck). Heh, I have a geforce 6800 on this desktop that I won't have access to once I get a laptop, and I'm not planning on playing Half Life 2 without 4x AA and 8x AF at 1280x960 running smoothly. I'm betting that the new XPS won't disappoint, but there are other options if it does.
