Another 9200 WUXGA opinion with a interesting comparison

I received my 9200 yesterday, although I never doubted what others where saying, I just wanted to see for myself before commenting on the WUXGA screen. I have had Inspiron's from 7000 work (7000 personal), 8200 work (8200 personal), 8500 work (8600 personal), 9100 work (9200 personal) all with the latest screens, video cards and processor's Dell offered in each computer model at that time. Because I have had so many Inspiron's I think that I can make a good comparison between screens, I think that this screen is no where close to being as clear and easy to look at as my 8200 was, Dell this thing starts by straining my eyes ending in a headache. I had my 9100 work computer with the same video card 15.4" WUXGA screen on my desk with the 9200 sitting right next to it yesterday, I pulled up a white screen on both machines (Word) and there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE IN SCREEN QUALITY, when I would look at the 9100 for a min then glance over to the 9200 my eyes would become strained almost immediately. This is a challenge to Dell or any one else for that matter, place a 9100 side by side to a 9200 and tell me that this is an advancement of technology or the monitor is fine. The 9100 is easy on the eyes and is just as bright as the 9200, and is way, way clearer than the 9200 and the screen color is crisp white, the colors don't run together and I can look at it all day long without getting a headache. The 9200 is just the opposite, the screen has a tan tinge to it, I get headaches and it is just not crisp. I have a problem, I Ebayed my 8600, I need a computer and I want a 17" monitor and do not see any reason to go down in resolution to solve a problem Dell needs to fix at their expense. I realize that my opinions on this monitor may be different from some, but this thing is awful. Dell is sending a replacement that I don't think will help but we will see. If your wondering about the rest of the computer, simply put, the best Dam Inspiron I have owned except I would like a 256 mb video card. It is a shame such a well priced value packed computer as the 9200 is ruined by an awful monitor. Respectfully and in my own opinion LeeU

Try writing more than one word or more than a single sentence and you will see how hard it is. Dosn't one start a sentence with capital letters? huh

I did exactly what you did, with a 5000e UXGA and a Sony 16.1" UXGA. I would say Sony is 9 over 10, 5000e is 6 over 10, 9200 is 1 over 10 in quality. 1 only because it is WUXGA and has a few hunderd additional pixels. I would rather keep my old scratched up PentiumIII 5000e...

Overwhelming number of people keep saying WUXGA on 9200 is terrible. After talking to the wife. I decided to cancel the order..

That's really sad, Measel. I'm sitting here with the WUXGA in front of me and I'm loving it. I've been staring at the lauded "white background in Word" for 3 hours and have zero eye fatigue, which I would have by now on my i4000's SXGA+. You shouldn't always trust the opinions of people who refuse to get used to new things -- I'm glad I didn't in this case.

ummm...have you seen my poll? about half the people are happy with it...

I was considering a 9200, but if half the people who buy one can't stand the display, that's enough to convince me to look elsewhere. I figure Dell will get the message if enough people return theirs and eventually change LCD vendors. When you guys enter your service code into the "manage my systems" feature at dell.com, does it tell you the LCD manufacturer?

andycogbill,

If you could see the screen on my 9100 you would understand why I don't like this display, the computer is awsome

LeeU,

Once you stop comparing this screen to others it's actually amazing. As I said, just gotta accept it as different.

a week or two(ihope) before i order mine..i hope they fix this! i cant work without high resolution!
After debating with few friends of mine that is well knowledgeable unlike my wife. hehe. I decided to re-order again. So, I called EPP sales phone line and got a lady, Kelli. She's very helpful and gave me new order at exact same price even the coupon i used, expired. So it was great. I am anxious.

So you say it looks amazing when not comparing to other screens,... so it does not look amazing when you do compare to other screens. Comparing screens (or any other items) to others is how we make educated decisions on whether something is worth the money or not. Anything would seem great if you hadn't seen anything better.

Yeah, which means half are unhappy with it. I know that in business, the goal is higher than only wanting 50% of the purchasers to be happy with it.

A couple of things.
1. I have the 9200 with WUXGA. I like it. I acknolwedge the coating is there but prefer it to glossy.
2. One cool thing about 1920 resolution is that it supports HI-DEF natively!! I downloaded some demo HD WMV's from microsoft that were 1080p (1920 x 1080) and they played flawlessly. No resizing. It was like a movie theater.
3. I think a lot of the controversy over the screen is NOT JUST the coating but a combination of the high res AND the coating. That coating is becoming standard on all laptops. The glossy look, is just the absence of the anti-glare coating and companies then call it a feature.
4. MOST IMPORTANT. For you guys who returned your 9200 because of your disdain for the screen, I understand; fine. But why are you perpetuating this rant about the screen quality? If you got rid of the computer, then move on and get another. Unless of course you feel bad about returning it and you use this forum to convince others and validate your decision.

1. There are tons of screens that are not glossy, with coating, and do not have this appearance. There are many screens that have antiglard coating that do not look like this one.

2. That is very cool indeed.

3. For the mostpart, including myself, I love the high res. and I think many people who are unhappy with this screen have stated that they want this screen BECAUSE of the high res. and hated to return it but did it ONLY because of the poor effect of the coating. However I do realize and have seen examples of where some people jump on here and start complaining of the "screen problem" and then start griping about the size of text etc. It is hard to make everyone understand the situation and to only post regarding the screen coating. It does seem also that the coating looks worse on wuxga, unless they use a different type on the wxga+

4. We are continuing to talk about it because we want wuxga quality without the blurry crap. I bought mine before it had been mentioned on these boards. If it had been mentioned, than I could have made a better decision instead of having to return mine when I got it for a wxga+, and wasting time without the computer that I need. Why are the people that like the screen going on and on about it? For the very same reason, to give people a chance to hear everyones opinion and make up their own mind. If we stopped going on about the bad, then the only comments on here would be the good, and people would get the perception that the wuxga has no problems at all.

I pulled down some 1080i stuff and it looks very nice. I cannot play 720p stuff tho. All my colors are inverted or something. Can anybody else comment on this?
