Another 9200 WUXGA opinion with a interesting comparison - Page 2

well said, jslessley. i too unfortunately bought it just before finding all of these forums. then i hoped that it was a mass hysteria, and that i would love the screen. i was given some hope by the fact that 50% of the people actually liked the screen. but when it arrived, 2 days ago, i was shocked and dismayed. i don't feel bad about returning it, i am very happy to do so. but i am pissed because dell really screwed the pooch with this one. they came so close to making a great laptop. awesome build quality, stellar speakers, great graphic card, dvi out etc. then they blow it with the screen. those of us who choose wuxga mostly did so because we LOVE great screens and we KNOW the possiblities (such as native hi-def, etc). but the screen, has really got to be one of the most important parts of a laptop. you look at it all the time. and i hate to be contradictory, but those 'glossy' screens are NOT just the absence of a coating. more over, the better screens have more backlighting (sony, toshiba qosmio, etc) and better viewing angles, color, black levels.. when i looked at the dell next to any other screen, i was painfully obvious that all of these features were far below the quality of better screens. i am pissed at dell for wasting my time! and wasting the potential of a hi-res screen. i rant because i want everyone to know. if you are happy, good for you, you should certainly voice that here too. but i REALLY wish i could have heard from the disappointed people before i ordered. i had only read that one rave review by pc mag or whatever. i also want to add to the uproar in hopes that dell will get it right next time. unfortunately, i don't think i'll be ordering any more dells, certainly without an opportunity to verify that they haven't chosen a terrible screen again. one thing i will admit. the bad dell screen was pretty good on dark backgrounds, and video. but i also use applications on my laptop, and that's where i feared i would go blind. but my screen was never really bright, even turned all the way up. maybe the coating looks good on the wxga+ screen, but it sure as heck doesn't work on the hi-res model. how could they sell it? i am baffled. i am baffled that there are so many people who don't hate it too. too be honest i like the glossy screens, but i used to have a 16'' uxga sony, that wasn't glossy at all, and it was beautiful. very easy on the eyes. it was just a standard lcd look, like you'd find on any screen if you were shopping for lcd panels. THAT would have been fine DELL. i for one, certainly don't need this new 'technology'! (that's a great marketing term, isn't it)

2. One cool thing about 1920 resolution is that it supports HI-DEF natively!! I downloaded some demo HD WMV's from microsoft that were 1080p (1920 x 1080) and they played flawlessly. No resizing. It was like a movie theater.
3. I think a lot of the controversy over the screen is NOT JUST the coating but a combination of the high res AND the coating. That coating is becoming standard on all laptops. The glossy look, is just the absence of the anti-glare coating and companies then call it a feature.
4. MOST IMPORTANT. For you guys who returned your 9200 because of your disdain for the screen, I understand; fine. But why are you perpetuating this rant about the screen quality? If you got rid of the computer, then move on and get another. Unless of course you feel bad about returning it and you use this forum to convince others and validate your decision.
Could you please share the link to the HD content download ? thanks

Goes to show how doing so is possible... unlike what the other user wrote about it being impossible.

Yeah... most people don't like 50/50 splits. Not too good for convincing someone that it's a good product if there's a 1 in 2 chance he/she won't like it.

You can download some demos here. There are both 720 and 1080 formats.

[b]1. Does the iXPS have the same problem?
2. Does it matter which manufacturer makes the screen?
It seems to be only the 9200 WUXGA screen.

After some one wrote that “You shouldn't always trust the opinions of people who refuse to get used to new things -- I'm glad I didn't in this case”. I decided to take my 9200 to work and poll the Rocket Scientist that I work with, yes real Rocket Scientist. There is a few things about Rocket Scientist, all brain cells that should have been marked for writing and grammar where switched at birth to make more math brain cells, so I apologize for my slaughter of the English language as superdood pointed out, two: pocket protectors are a myth and lastly when a new computer shows up around Rocket Scientist its like dropping blood into the shark tank at Sea World, it creates a frenzy.
I had 10 of my co-workers come buy one at a time and look at my 9100 work computer next to my personal 9200, as I said in my first post both have the same video card and both have the WUXGA screens.

I asked the following questions:

1) Which monitor do you like the best? Excluding size.
70% 9100 30% 9200
2) Which monitor is clearer?
100 % 9100 0% 9200
3) Which monitor is brighter?
40% 9100 60% 9200
4) Do you see any shimmering or sparkle effect on the 9100 or 9200?
0% 9100 100 % 9200
5) Does it bother you? (See note below)
70% Yes 30% No
6) Do you think you could get used to it in time?
70% No 20% Yes 10 % Maybe
7) Which computer would you buy, 9100 or 9200? (based on monitor only, not the computer).
60% 9100 40% 9200

Note: The ones that said it did not bother them all had glasses or contacts except our network guy who also has glasses but it bothered him.

We all used to have 21” or 25” big tube type monitors on our desk, now we mostly have 21” LCD high end View Sonics. When I would go to one of my co-workers office to look at something on her computer I would have to always increase her monitor refresh rate as I’m very sensitive to that (I have 20:15 uncorrected vision) but she did not understand why it bothered me (she wore contacts), she had Lasic surgery performed on her eyes and now she has to have very high refresh rates. I’m a bit curious about the others out there that like this monitor, do you wear contacts or glasses? I tried to do this as fairly and objectively as I could. I do believe that direct comparison is the best way to determine if this monitor is a step forward or backwards.
Let the flames begin. LeeU

ROFL!!! I polled "rocket scientists" that "I work with". Yes, these are "real" rocket scientists....

hehehe, it's just funny to me. Maybe you guys should just retrurn the product you don't like and get something else? Just saying, it's my opinion and stuff sot you guys please don't get freaked out and pissed at me and lose it on me.

I seriously doubt that DELL is selling faulty products to the masses. It makes perfect sense to me that a DELL WUXGA panel that is 17 inches will be hard as hell to deal with. My god, the 15.4 inch screens are hard as hell to read as it is due to the smaller native resolution.

Interesting report there, since i do in fact wear contacts (-2.25 strength) and the screen does not bother me at all. The screen is easy on my eyes especially compared to my crt (which i have to run it at 100 refresh rate or else it bothers me, at 60 i can see it refreshing). For some reason useing this laptop screen dosent strain/dry out my eyes compared to useing my friends latitude 600. Just while posting this looking at the little smilies to the right, wow do they stand out so clear the anti-glare is not at all visable on them at all but around them so they pop out looking beautiful.

And did you read what the German magazine Xonio wrote about the WUXGA screen?

Average display
The high-resolution wide picture-display (1.920 x 1.200 image points) shows good contrasts, but weakness of the brightness, and also the illumination is not so even, as she(it) could be. With unfavorable lighting conditions is to be recognized only a little. But stood to us to the test lie which Dell placed at disposal for us as a Vorabmuster.

hmmm, to any 9200 owner :

Could I convince any of you to go in the display panel and tweak your RBG to your likings ?

http://notebookforums.com/showthread...ighlight=tweak
Heres a small tweak guide on how to do it ...

The reason I ask is because I have an iXPS right now. I might be looking at the possibility to swap for a 17 incher i9200.

The first day I got my iXPS I really didnt appreciate the screen that much, so I tweaked the contrast gamma and rbg values and now I really dont mind my screen at all, in fact I think its great

So, try this little guide out, and post your impressions again, if you feel like it

already did that its pretty cool

:-P i saw your post before my laptop came and bookmarked it, it was one of the first things i tried out when i got it. It really improves the colors and stuff
post #35 of 35
Whoa what a differance!! Thanks a ton for that information on adjusting the colors individually! I have been playing with the settings awhile and never had found something that I completely liked..... Needless to say, I finally found it!

BTW, this is with an 8600 with the Samsung WSXGA+ screeen.
