Well the title says it all. May we all have a moment of silence.
Truely a sad, sad day...
I feel really insignificant right now...
whats the reason behind it
hmm, that sucks. But what is the reason though? Is Clevo no longer producing that chassis, or is just Sager discontinuing it?
Not really surprising, I mean really the 9860 is really an upgrade of it, right?
They have it on the SagerNotebook front page. Doesn't look very discontinued like that.

The ad I saw in the new issue of Computer Shopper didn't have the 8790 in it. I thought the 9860 was the successor of the 8890 (well sorta the 8890 category, not the actual direct descendent of the 8890). I guess the 8790 is the last of the cool running P4's (northwood) because all you can get now is Prescott.

I'm w/ Nick. I think the 9860 is the 8890's big bro. I would guess that the 8790's going to be replaced by a PCI-E version in the somewhat near future (ie- my guess w/ the 5690, too).

No facts to back that up- just opinion.

Dang. Discontinued in less than a year. *sigh*

I think the 9860 is its replacement. Im surprised they carried it as long as they did... Still its sad to see it go...the one that started it all
post #11 of 35
I think its more than a replacement, its a business thing you take away the cheaper notebook so people, if they want power now have to buy the brand that costs more.

Its removing competition so people at Sager can get more money.
now, now, mosh, lets not be too judgemental.

True it probably is a move to protect their new flagship model, but Sager is a small company in a very competitive business. They need to make sure that their new investments are successful to stay afloat.

At that rate they would have removed the 4790 as well. Simple business if no one buys it why sell it. This was all in the grand scheme of things, the 9860 was made to replace Sager's last flag ship(8790). All though there was lots of luck with the 8790 chasis as well as the 56xx chasis, don't be suprised if there is more to come in those chasis one Clevo implements PCI-e in all their notebooks.

The 8790 was also too frickin hot! How is the 9860 in comparison?

I'll second that. Seems that there are a few ppl saying that the L. palmrest is warm. Wonder how "warm" it is in comparison.

I'd like a unit w/ WSXGA+ but the 9860 is just a bit big. The 8790, while big, doesn't feel "too big" to me. Anything bigger seems like a bit much for as much as I carry mine around. If it always sat stationary, I wouldn't mind the 9860's footprint. Maybe about the time I'll be ready to upgrade, there'll be a redesigned 8790 w/ improved cooling and PCI-E.

*crosses fingers*

Support question

How does the discontinuance affect us support-wise for those of us w/ models that are no longer manufactured?

For instance, I just bought my 8790 in March, so I've got 3 more months of original warranty + 2 yrs additional warranty left on it. Say next year something goes haywire, are there going to be parts to repair it with? How're things covered if parts aren't available? Maybe some 8890 or 56xx series owners might be able to answer this (if Luke/Adam/Tom/Laura aren't game for this one).

sad to see it go...was a great machine...truly great

It is a sad day to see a good soldier go, but I'd say the upside is this would signal that a new machine is very much in the works ... The 8790 was definitely a more capable machine than the 4790, but was relatively the same size. I know I'm not the only one that thinks the 9860 is just big,and I can't see Sager going too long without a updated 2 spindle DTR. I think this is just setting the stage for a replacement to the 4750 and 4790 sometime early next year...My prediction is an announcement the early part of January with shipments beginning the end of February.

I dont think we need to worry about Warranty's etc, i think it just means they wont make it anymore and sell it, they'll be more than happy to repair faults etc.

I'd like to know this too. So far I haven't had any problems with my 8890 since the warranty expired. Though I am starting to notice the flicker I got fixed starting to come back on occasions. I'd like to extend the question to include what's going to happen to those of us that are out from the standard Sager 1yr warranty and don't have the additional warranty?

ie, if this flickering gets worse and I need it fixed, will Sager still be able to help me out?
