HP Pavilion zv5000z laptop. Is it worth it?

I have a Gateway 200x right now. It's thin, light, and the plusses stop there. Frankly, it sucks. The Intel Centrino prevents efficient multi-tasking and the integrated graphics aren't all that redeeming either. The screen is small too at only 14.1 inches. The entire computer is cheap and scratches really really easily.

I'm a college student majoring in communications. My emphasis is electronic media and I do a lot of digital photo/video editing. I'm also an avid gamer. I don't need a really high-end system for what I do, but I need something better than what I have. I've been looking at this HP zv5000z. My friend has it and the specs are as follows (from what I can remember):

Celeron processor (his choice to cut cost, but I'd get pentium or athlon).
NVidia GeForce 9xxx w/128mb dedicated video memory (upgradeable)
512mb RAM (upgradeable to 2gb)
15.9" (NOT 15.4") Widescreen
DVD/CD-RW
40gb hard drive
256 Internal/external USB flash drive w/256mb SD memory card
SD card reader/writer (in addition to the USB drive)
One PC card slot.
3 USB ports (in addition to the internal/external drive)
15-pin and 25-pin plug-ins
One 4-pin firewire port
12 cell battery
Built in Harman-Kardon speakers.

Right now I think I could get about $1100 or even more for my laptop because the school had a lot of exclusive upgrades built in. My questions are:

Is HP generally reliable?
How is HP's customer service?
Would this be a good buy?

Thank you for any information you give me.
