Sager 9860 upgradeability

Thread Starter
Hi

I m thinking about buying a sager 9860 notebook with the lowest specs (not enough money ).

So I know, that it is "possible" to upgrade the CPU, Ram and GPU.

But did anyboady tried it yet? Or know how it would be with the temperature and the other problems?
Like drivers, stable running and so on?

And can I upgrade the HDD and/or build in the second later?

And where are new cpus, gpus and hdds available? And for what price??

Thanks for the help!

I would also like to know that if the mobo can be upgraded later to support AMD 64's, in case the pentium 64's wont be compatible witht he 9860 when they come out.

Well, people are running the 9860 right now with specs greater than the bare minimum. So, obviously, if you upgrade to at least those, there will not be a problem. RAM upgrade don't usually cause too many heat problems, unless you put some crazy sh*t in there. CPU upgrades will cause more heat generation, but the computer should be able to handle it. GPU upgrades are not available yet, so ... who knows!

I haven't done it on a 9860, but on other laptops and desktops and there were not problems with upgrades (except incompatibility, sometimes). There are almost never driver problems, except if you upgraded the GPU, since, obviously, you would need drivers for the new GPU. Other than that, the computers are completely stable.

You can add in a HDD/upgrade your primary one later. All you have to do is swap it out. Obviously, if you change your primary HDD, you will have to go through various steps to make it usable and install the OS on it, etc.

The answer to all your problems: http://www.pricewatch.com (everything), http://www.crucial.com (good memory), http://www.pctorque.com (everything). All these websites will have parts for your computer. If buying from pricewatch, it is your job to ensure compatibility. PCTorque and Crucial will sell you compatible hardware.

The motherboard will not support AMD64's. There are none out that support both p4 and amd. You would need to wait for sager to release a AMD based one with PCIe. This will take a while as there is no such motherboard out right now.

Intel announced that their 64 bit line of Pentium 4s will be compatible with the 915 chipset, which is what the 9860 has. So yes, you will be able to upgrade to the 64 bit Pentiums WHEN they come out.

Yes it's possible, though the instruction manual says that you should get tech support to upgrade the CPU

The only thing that drivers would make a difference with is the graphics card, the motherboard should immediately recognize and accept new CPU or RAM. If not all you have to do is go into BIOS and hit Reset Configuration Settings.

This should be the easiest part...

It sounds as if the new top of the line ATI M28 will be available soon. Price is difficult, as is where to buy them. Pricewatch.com is a good resource, though it must always be combined with Resellerratings.com so that you can see how good the retailer is.
