Sentia 244 Weird Problem-will Not Boot Sometimes

Everyone,

Could come please give me some advice on this situation. I just bought a Alienware Sentia 244 a little more than a year ago and its giving me problems a month after the warranty expires (WTF?). Here is the problem:

When you try to boot the computer the you hear the Hard Drive spin then it dies and you hear 1 and then 2 beeps (video card error). Nothing shows up on the screen, then screen get a different color lines on it. Called Alien Tech Support, off warranty but they were nice to let it slide just this once, and told me to do the following:

external monitor hook up ("load optimal default" in Bios),
unattach the wireless built in wireless card for a minute,
paper clip to the metal piece in front of the laptop, where the latch goes into
etc......

So I tried all of the following and it seems that after you load the optimal default in Bios, I get the screen back on the laptop. HOWEVER, here is the kicker once I remove the power cord from the computer and try to boot up from battery power, I get the same beep beep no screen problem again.

Doing the bios reset and having the power cord on, powering on= no problem so far,
Doing the bios reset and having the power cord out, powering on= problem

Is this a motherboard problem? Will the laptop have to be sent back to AW who will charge at least 2 hrs Diagnostic + cost of parts?

PS. another interesting thing that I notice is that the system clock is always reset (too year 2002) everytime this problem happens. hope that helps?

Thank you guys for any comments, help, advice...

Replaced the CMOS Battery...still no good

I took your advice and went to radioshack and bought the new battery. Replaced the one in the laptop, but still I have the same problem. Again, what is strange is that after I do the external monitor thing (and loaded optimal defaults in bios), the laptop has NO problem booting with the AC cord plugged in. Once I remove the AC cord it goes back to the beep....2 beep and the screen gets all these vertical lines. Tried it several times and its the same thing.....Anything else I can do? Thanks

Even tried updating the Bios...

Updated the Bios on system to 1.16. Thought I had the solution buy the LCD still shows black screen on boot. Only problem solved is that the beeps do not happen anymore and the computer loads OS (even though I can't see it on the LCD) . Know that OS is working b/c there is a signal to the external monitor. Updated video drivers to latest Intel version as well. Any suggestions? Thankz+++ in advance

Bios 1.16

i have the same problem... the only i can get it to work, is when it finishes booting (with black screen) i manually put the machine in standby by pressing functionkey F1. then once in sleep mode, i press the power button and magically the LCD comes back to life, no more black screen on my sentia. untill my next shut down of course

I've got the same problem too
Boots up with black screen, only standby and resume fixes it, once the machine has booted all reboots and everything work ok.

I've still got warranty but I need the machine so can't send it away, might give them a call about it later today - it's really annoying.

Only other thought is to install the 1.17 BIOS from Uniwill, since you are out of warranty I guess it wont matter to you, I'll however stick to speaking with AW tech support

Its Alienware's way of saying you should have got a extended warranty... ?

i updated with the latest drivers but still no luck.

ok so after updating the driver i shut down booted in to safe mode. shut down, rebooted in to normal mode and the problem seems to be fixed.

when xp boots in to safe mode it assumes you can not get in to windows in normal mode, so it sets the display drives back to their default settings. should fix everything . try it out let us know

Will give it a go, I've thought I've fixed mine previously but the next day I boot up and black screen again
post #12 of 24
well thought that worked still same damn error. oh and my warentee expired 4 days ago. called in and they told me to boot in safe mode.

problem was solved for about 2 days. wierd very weird. i think the sentia might be switching to secondary monitor, gonna try disabling the secondary card in the device manager and see if it help.
