Upgrading?

I'm looking to buy a notebook, but my demands a a bit more extreme than most. The laptop will be going up ladders onto rooftops and sitting in a hot truck. I've been looking through all the notes here and WOW. You mean there are more manufacturers than just Dell, HP, Gateway, Toshiba etc.... I like what i read about the Twinhead, because it's built rugged and still afordable. (not like IBM) Good reviews so far on it. I am curious though, some of the threads talk about buying barebones and upgrading, i'm not sure what all can be upgraded by lil ol me on this n15r model. My initial idea of a good amount to spend was $1200, but i bought a laptop on short notice for that much, DV1156 but i just don't think it's gonna hold up to what i want to do with it. I was curious about buying the base model with extended warranty and then upgrading as i get more funds. No better place to ask these questions than in this forum. I like that you folks aren't paid to review. You are real time users. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Panasonic Toughbooks (basic info here, just search Google for specific model info): http://www.panasonic.ca/English/Offi...edfeatures.asp

And then there is the Legendary IBM Thinkpad (practically indestructable):
