Files over wireless network

I have my wireless connection at home and I'm just wondering if it's possible to send files from my pc to my notebook via the broadband router? and how?
yeah i've been trying to figure this out. instead of wasting time learning hwo to do it, i just log on aim or mirc and send myself these files. transfer rates are pretty good, about 4 megs per second.

Yes, you just have to set up a network between the two computers. Run Network Wizard.

right click on the file/folder, and enable "file sharing" through your network. Very easily done. I do it all the time.

usually you share the "folder" or "drive".
if you share a drive, everything under that specific drive will be shared.
same thing happens to folder sharing.

folder:

right click on the folder,
select sharing and security
by default, there does not have any check box for you to enable the file sharing. you have to run the "Network Setup Wizard". it will guide you thru step by step.

you have to do that for all computers which you want to share files.

I don't think he will be able to share the files until he sets up the network. Even though he is getting wireless off his desktop's router, he's not going to be able to share files between them until he runs Network Wizard. You want to go to "My Network Places" and on the left hand side you'll see "Set up a home or small office network". Run that. There is also "Set up a wireless network for a home or small office", but I have never ran it that way before. I set a network up between my desktop and laptop using a Firewire connection. It worked like a charm. I transfered gigs of stuff over to my lappy in minutes. I took a look at the "Set up a wireless network for a home or small office" and unless you haven't installed software from your routers manufacturer, which you obviously have probably done already, I think this option would screw things up. It looks like it's trying to take over options that should be in your routers firmware to begin with. Has anyone else tried this?

if he has connection with his broad band router, he already has a network setup. all he needs to do is set up file and print sharing (i.e. right click your hard drive letter, go to sharing and security or properties and go from there. if you haven't activated sharing already do that.) if you want advance sharing you will need to go into folder options (you can do this a couple of ways, but just go into control panel and click on that, scroll all the way down, and click off simple file sharing).

i'd do a search on the web and find setting up home network, file sharing etc.

just make sure that you have security features set up for you folders or you have enabled security features on your wireless router, otherwise anyone who can hop onto your wireless network can get to your files

oh, if you want to swap files both ways, you will have to do the above on both computers.

Yeah, definitely do-able although I only recommend this for normal files. For big files, definitely go with the firewire connection between the 2 computers.

In terms of setup, there are many tutorials on the net on how to do this. Just Google search "sharing files through wireless network" or "connect home computers through wireless" or other phrases like that.

The basic thing is to enable File Sharing in your network settings and set wireless setting to computer-computer (ad hoc) only. That will allow you to share only within your own network and not outside networks. You need to join the same domain on both computers as well. Yeah, it is NOT that easy to set up. I spent a whole day trying to get it to work and eventually just settled on Firewire since my files are gigabyte sizes. And try using the Microsoft Network Wizard.

And no, you cannot connect 2 computers using regular USB 2.0 cables. That would be SO SO sweet if that was the case. But nope. You'll need a cross-over type USB 2.0 cable for this to happen.

No need to run network setup wizard, just make sure both computers are members of the same workgroup (the default for windows is WORKGROUP). You can change workgroups by going to Control Panel-->System-->Computer Name -->Change Workgroup. Then, as soon as you share a folder on your computer, go to the other computer and go to network places and it should automatically see the shared folder. If it doesn't, then click Show Other Workgroup Computers on the side and you should see it.

Actually... I've had to run the network wizard on the computers that I wanted to share. Make sure you turn on file and printer sharing. Personally, i just use a cat5e cable and connect my two computers directly and transfer that way. Its really fast and really easy...
