is this a symptom of a dying drive

i have an old (circa1997) 27gb maxtor that i've thrown into a firewcase enclosure(it actually started life in my bondi blue iMac 233 replacing the stock 4gb). i use it for miscellany on my 8887, and it runs 24/7. today it started to emit a very high pitch whine. is this a harbinger of bad news to come? it's run great for years....i'd hate to think that a funeral is in order.

DOnt know if it means its dying but it means that either the plates are spinning off center or the bearins are gone. Ive replaced 3 100gig WD because of that problem. Good Luck! That noise is so freakin annoyin

Gatz,

check out www.grc.com and look into getting SPIN RITE. It's pretty slick and gives one a good warning when HD's are gonna fail.

Either the heads are grinding or the bearings are gone, but I've never heard of a case of that happening. Most drives just "stick" and then won't spin up, or the controller dies.

SpinRite looks like a very capabable product, but it's not NTFS compatible....

Now thats very interesting as I have one of those and its making that noise as well.
Must be a common problem with then.

Yeah it is pretty common, does yours sound like a high pitched grinding? Cuase right now one of mine is already doing it again, but one of them has lasted me alomst a whol year!! amazing...

Not grinding as such but more of a whine especially when cold.

That's definetly bearings failing. As the drive warms up the lubricant behaves different and the friction in the bearings decreases so the noise will get quieter or go away.

We had a pool pump loose its bearings once and it would squeal like hell until it warmed up (usually 20 minutes or so).
