Using Wireless Internet...

I know that I have wireless internet on my laptop but I can't seem to figure out how to use it. When I don't plug my modem in it says that no network was found. Can someone fill me in on how the wireless feature works and how I can surf the net without being connected to my modem? Thanks.

|LAPTOP| ~ ~ ~ ~ |ROUTER|------------|CABLE MODEM|---------|WIRING

This is the common wireless usage. By modem you mean a wireless router, right?
Sorry, I just didn't understand what you said... Could elaborate that?

edit: use the words "setting up a wireless connection" (without quotes) on google and you can find lots of useful things.

This can be particularly useful.

I believe the problem here is you are on dial up, well partly.

See you need broadband internet access (dsl/cable/etc) and then you need a wireless router to share the internet connection. If broadband is not availible you may be able to find a wireless router that will work with dial, this would be a very unusual product though.

So while your notebook is capable of accessing the internet wirelessly, it needs to be within 50 feet or so of a wireless access point such as the one I briefly described above.

Oh ok, I see. So you have to have a wireless router in order for it to work? I have a router, but it isn't wireless. I'm using high speed internet/no dial up btw.

So would it be possible to pick up a connection from another house (that has a wireless router)? I don't think anyone around here has one, but I'm just curious. Thanks.

Yeah it would be possible to pick up someone else's wireless network. If they don't have it encrypted (which, suprisingly .. many people don't) you should be able to get on no problem. If they do have it encrypted, you would have to know their network key. In my house, I can pick up 3 or 4 of my neighbor's networks. 2 of which are wide open. Just driving around a couple streets down, i picked up about 6 more between here and there. Which like 1 of them was encrypted. So if you DO go wireless, make sure you set up encryption or have someone set it up for you if you do not know how.

yes, you need a wireless router to access the internet "wirelessly". I think you can share a dial-up connection with another computer (the idea is to access the other computer, which shares the dial-up connection, through the network). However, this is everything but covenient....

Don't forget, If you ever do buy a wireless router!
Encrypt the connection so nobody can mooch off your signal!!!

I do that at work now, Stupid hotel guests trying to mooch off my WAP.

There is a product that will work with dial-up. It's called a wiflyer. www.wiflyer.com Not an endorsement. NEver used it. Just found it interesting that it exists.
