alright hey everybody check out my desktop - Page 3

Hello, I'm new on this board. Anyway, I don't currently own a Sager laptop, or any laptop for that matter. However, I'm planning on getting a Sager 5680 around Christmas time (Hopefully those sexy UXGA Wide Angle monitors are still in stock). I really like what you guys do with your desktops, they look really good. I'm just getting into technology now, so I really have no idea how to create something like that. When I finally do receive my laptop, would anyone be so kind as to give me a walkthrough of how to make a really nice one? (Zachquiel: Your desktop looks really good, I like how you combine anime art with the rest of the "work." Anyway, I just thought I'd give you some praise, especially on those awesome bubbles for your different games.) Anyway, thanks for reading my post, if anyone would like to talk to me, or chat, I have AOL/AIM. Screen name is Hindu Stu. Later!

No need to 'roll your own', there's tons of websites where others have posted their XP themes free for download and use. Do a google for XP styles in google.

Style XP program to apply, select styles
Style repository

If you want to have some real fun, check out replacing the XP explorer shell with blackbox, bluebox, litestep or one of the many other alternatives at Desktopian

I run the blackbox shell

It started as a direct port. Then feature creep took over. The styles are still compatible. I got in on the first Beta release and at the time wrote a nasty VB program to parse the start menu folder structure into blackbox compliant. Now it's got dynamic startmenu processing so the app is useless.

I was attempting to emerge blackbox and eterm onto the Gentoo side of this beast and I inadvertantly overwrote some crucial config files (eterm did it). Now I get a fsck error on /dev/boot and X only gives me TVM or is it twm? I'm going to format the drive and start over soon anyway. Gonna try and get Mandrake, ReHat, Debian, Gentoo and Xp running on 40GB drive. Should be fun.

Whoa, going a little overboard on those distros, aren't we?

I have gentoo running fluxbox right now, so it works well. BTW, what config file did you overwrite? Gentoo has config_protect feature to avoid just that kind of problem. Oh well, at least Gentoo 1.4 got released today...

longhorn

you wouldn't want to use longhorn just yet anyways... its still in alpha stage .. prob won't be in first stage beta till like begininng of fall.. i have heard there are way to way bugs in it .. not only does it not have good driver support but theres other things.. i have a link here to a forum ... if you are going to d/l it atleast wait till beta .. atleast then most big bugs are fixed and it is somewhat more stable as a default os and not just a os on Virtual pc

http://groups.msn.com/LonghornM3/longhornm4.msnw

it has revews. screen shots. and some other good stuff about it..

Zachquiel

This is my first post here at sagerforums, and I hope you feel honored that you are the person who prompted me to do so! I must say, your July desktop is one awesome piece of work. And i'm sure you've heard all this before, but I just gotta know, how did you get it all to come together like that. I tried customizing my desktop, and it looks cool as long as you don't look at the thing as a whole, none of the aspects seem to go together, and I really want it to look finished like yours. Could you get me headed in the right direction?

Probably one of the best windows shell enhancers is Aston Shell and I'd recommend it to anyone who wanted to try out something new.

If I'm not mistaken, it actually replaces the Windows shell, and it does seem to make moving through windows tasks slightly faster. I don't use it on my Sager but I do have it on my desktop at home, running the Windows Longhorn shell right now

Cheers!

Aston is nice I tried it a while back. It does in fact replace the windows shell. For the un-initiated.

Windows is the OS (Operating System)
But the graphical interface is actually the explorer shell. The fine folks in Redmound (sic intentional) decided to make the explorer.exe both a graphical shell and file browser. Which is why when sometimes when you go into the file browser and it crashes it takes your startbar along with it. There's some funky stuff in the exe to make it figure out if it should run as a shell or file browser.

By means of simple registry setting you can make ANY .exe your shell. I've gone as far as running defrag as the shell so that I can do a full-defrag. For customers running MMI/HMI (man/Human machine interface...google process control wonderware rsview). I'll set the the HMI as the shell. Easy, simple, quick and the operators can't play solitare when they're supposed to making sure the tank isn't going to blow up.

Anyway there are lots of alternative shells out there. One of the most popular was called Litestep and it was a VERY configurable shell and has a learning curve. It has since lost some popularity to dissention of the developers and split off into many variants.

Check out http://www.desktopian.org for a nice list of different shells. What's nice about these is most don't require an install routine and if you don't like them you can just delete the folder. Some will run overtop the explorer shell also.

Well worth some time to check them out.
