Maximum fan speed and 2 leds are blinking

Hello ...

Problem:
After running the system for a 15-20 minutes some kind of "overheat" protection gets triggered and all fans are on maximum speed and in addition the 2 and 3rd led on the "led panel" are blinking. This happens when the system is "idling" as well.

Observations:
The temperature is stable around 60 degree celcius. As soon as the "overheat" protection is triggered is goes down to 55 degree C due to the increased fan speed. The temperature is measured with MobileMeter.

Workaround:
The only workaround is to shut down the system and turn it on again. A soft reboot doesn't work.

Does anyone know how to turn off the overheat protection or how to change a setting which affects this behavior.

Firmware/Bios: 1.00.10 (latest availble here)

Thank you.

Regards,
-Mat

My problem is related to the following threads:

60 degree C in idle is just too much. The various bios updates didn't fix any problems.

Mat,

It appears as if you have one of the first generation 8790's. I had one and returned it because of heat issues and the blinking lights/turbo fans that never shut off.

Have you cleaned out the exhaust system of your machine yet? There are three intakes on the botton (Make sure all "suck in" air and that the little one for the memory is not exhaustin). You can use canned air and low it into the unit - BECAREFUL that you don't overdrive the fans - I use a toothpick as a fan stopper whenever I clean out my unit. Another thing that you should do is lift up the keyboard and blow out any junk that may have accumulated there.

If the problem persits after yu have cleaned the unit, I would contact Sager or your reseller for an RMA as something is defective - be it a fan, the controller, or something else.

Also insure that when you system is idling that you don't have tasks that are running and consuming a lot of CPU. In other words insure that it is really ideling. NERO's IN-CD and the ROXIO compliment products sometimes go "crazy" and start using all the CPU available and this tends to "cook" the machine.

Hope this helps.

Hello G-Omaha ...

Thank you for your reply. Indeed I have one of the first 8790 units. What's the idle temperature in your replacement unit?

The fans look clean and the "System idle process" takes 98-99% of the CPU resources.

I guess I have to plan a trip to Sager again. It would be my 4rd. The first time the WLAN antenna was on the wrong connector, the 2nd time my harddisk crashed and the 3rd time the replacement HD crashed again after a month.

My 8790 (2nd version) has the WSXGA+ screen and a 3.4GHz processor.

Right now it is at 39C. I have had it on all day and been looking through the internet and off and on rendering some DVD's (Converting MPEG-2s to DVD). I have the fans set as normal. The room temperature is about 76/78F.

Temp just dropped to 38C - Guess it is because all I am now doing is viewing a single thread and typing in a reply.

Highly recommend that trip to Sager.

I think that some of the first 8790's had bad sensors or they were incorrectly positioned. Also my first unit had the CPU fan inverted (it blew out hot air into the other vents).

g-omaha, i have cleaned out my system, i believe we were discussing this in another post called "lagging". i was at a constant 50C before, now i range from 40-50C, fan kicks on at 50 and shuts off at 40. does this seem right to you? how do you manage to keep your system at 39C even converting dvd's? this seems a bit low, do you have a cooler or keep your fans on high? is there a setting to change the high/low temp. settings? are you running the new bios v.1.00.10? i just don't understand, i haven't heard of anyone with that low of temps.

My bad - the system temperature is not 39C when rendering DVD's and MPEG files. It is when I am browsing the net, etc (low usage tasks). After the initial surege and high fan usages, the machine will settle down and the temps stay between 38C and 39C. Now when I render, the temps vary in the 56C/58C range with the "Turbo Fans" disabled and at 47C/49C with the "Turbo Fans" enabled. Once the "Turbo Fans" are enabled, it seems like the main fans keep on running (at a very low rate) even as the units temperature falls below 40C (the normal shut off point). Don't know why mine runs so cool; however, I'm not going to try to "fix it". My all time low reading on an idle machine was 27C, a couple of months back; however, the room temps were about 74/76F and I was using the Antac laptoop cooler.

Blinky lights

Caps lock and Numeral Lock blinking? Had that problem, had to ship the unit back to sager. They had to replace the motherboard to fix the problem. So far so good. Do a search for HL2 Oddity and youll see my posts to the problem and the result.

Hello ..

The 2 leds I am referring to are the ones at the middle of the top of the keyboard. The 2nd and the 3rd led. They have a "lock" icon and the locks are labeled with 1 and A.

G-Omaha is right again!

This blinking light and fan thingy just started popping on my beast as well.
I followed G's suggestion and pulled the heat sink off the CPU and cleaned it out. It was packed with all kinds of goodies and gunk. It took all of about 15 minutes to complete. Thanks Agian G. My PC is smokin' again; I mean, it's not Smoking, like it's to hot smoking. Never mind. BTW, the heatsink need a bit of force to pull off the CPU. That was kind of scary.
Best to you all & have a great X-Mas.
