I'd like to upgrade my 700m with dvd burner but don't know whichone is right and supported by Dell. Does anybody know what kind of dvd burner dell provides with 700m? Is nec nd-6500a right for me?

does dell sell 6500a? last time i asked they did not sell that model thou.

to answer your question, 6500a fits into 700m's dvd bay without additional modifications.

you can get one from newegg.com but it won't be supported / warrantied by dell

Thanks for answer superfire. Just wondered if there is any other burner which would fit into 700m without any modifications?

I put the Panasonic UJ-825-B in my 700m, Newegg had it a few weeks ago but it's not even listed anymore so they must be sold out for good.

Anyways it's a pretty good fit and works well. I'd still recommend the NEC Burner though since it'll burn at 8x (supposedly) and it can do dual layer DVDs.

Are you sure? I pulled the 6500a out of my Inspiron 9200 and it would not fit in my 700m. The connector is on the wrong side. The picture of the 6500a on the Newegg web page matches up with the one I pulled from the 9200 also.

you have to take the plastic housing off the original drive that came with the 700m then remove the PCB from the back. Pop it in the new drive put the housing on that one and it should work. No telling if the front bezel will line up perfectly though.

Is there anywhere online that details or has pictures of this proceedure?

Edit: just took my Drive Out it's a DVD Rom Drive and it's a Teac Model: -CE1

The connector is definately on the wrong side. The Drive does have the plastic housing that can be removed, and I see the PCboard, I'm unclear how if the 6500A has the connector on the wrong side that I can get the PCB to fit?
