HI everybody
I am trying to configure my new 4760 laptop (video, sound and nic). Suse detected all those but it seems that none work properly
I did install XFree86 4.2.0 but didnot work I even copied RATHA XF86config file to mine but still it gives me a fatal IO error in line 104 (Connection reset by peer) on Xserver":0.0"
Can you guyshelp

could you please put the rest of the output on your console (the stuff surrounding that error). also, the contents of your x log (usually /var/log/XFree86.0.log) would be helpful. maybe even try a 'startx -- -logverbose 8' for a bigger log output.

Finally got 8.2 installed on my 8887 last night. NIC worked fine (you have to configure it w/yast). Had to download the graphics driver from ATI to get it working. Still working on sound.

there seems to be something wrong with your monitor or screen setup... maybe refresh rates or something. could i please see your xf86config file?

you might want to try setting your horizontal refresh to '30-100' and your vertical refresh to just '60'. and i don't know if you've done this already, but in the list of resolutions for each depth, try listing it in descending order starting with your lcd's native resolution.

I did all than but still could not get the 1440x900 resolution
I tried both default depths 8 and 16
are you trying to use ati's drivers or the drm drivers?
Thread Starter
I downloaded the ati driver from their website and I installed it
but there was a step that I skipped (compiling the kernel) that I could not do because of the runtime time error it generates
so I used the VESA driver.
I don't know what a drm driver is.
the vesa driver is really generic and probably doesn't support your resolution.

the dri project is an open source project for 3d in xfree86. they reverse-engineered the radeon, and the driver they provide is pretty good, and more stable than ati's drivers. you might want to try that:

http://dri.sourceforge.net

in the documentation section, there's a beginner's guide for installation which is really easy to follow. the driver you want is "radeon".

give that a shot, and let me know how it goes.

Actually, I posted a correction later. Apparently I was on crack when I thought I was getting native 1440x900 on my laptop. I hadn't run it much under Windows yet so I wasn't aware of what it looked like when it was actually in its native resolution. When I finally started GIMP and got a ruler to measure a known image, I realized it was not displaying graphics at the proper ppi.

None of the Linux drivers (VESA, radeonfb, etc.) support 1440x900 as it is a nonstandard resolution. The fglrx drivers from ATI might, but I couldn't get those to work, or at least at the time I tried, things were crashing all over the place and I eventually went back to square one with VESA.

Sorry to mislead you Maybe I should go amend my post.

I search drivers for 4760/D470W To Audio/Modem/Webcam
hello (sorry, my language english is verry bad, I speak French).

The Model Sager 4760 (D470W) or Sager 4060 D400E/D410E use chipset SIS 7018 and SIS 7013 (audio and Modem) and the webcam Z-STAR inside.

I use Red Hat 9.0 (install with /NOPROB for boot)

do you have the Drivers for the models.

Thank you,
Br,
Eric Kranich in FRANCE.

4760 with 1440x900 no problem...

Ratha and co.,

Are you still having trouble with the 4760 and 1440x900 resolution? I started on a debian woody, and eventually settled on redhat 9 because I needed Ximian Desktop 2.

But I'm not having any trouble running in 1440x900. I verified my resolution by downloading a background image of that size to see if it fit without stretch. No problem.

So, I don't know if anyone is still having problems, but it does in fact work, and I can post my X config if anyone is interested. Don't have it set up for multiple heads yet though.

I would be very interested, please post when you get a chance.

Yes, please do! Would love to see it.

Umm resolution...

Hey what is wrong in trying this in ya XFconfig file :

Modes "1400x900" ?

Considering this is < or = to the max resolution, it will run, as long as you have a proper driver ( fglrx or radeon(dri)). I doubt vesa will consider that mode genuine.

hope that helps.

Also, just a note on how to verify the mode you are actully currently running...

run:

xdpyinfo

and after a few pages of output you should see something like...

screen #0:
dimensions: 1280x1024 pixels (433x347 millimeters)
resolution: 75x75 dots per inch
depths (7): 24, 1, 4, 8, 15, 16, 32
root window id: 0x7c
depth of root window: 24 planes

Hope this helps...

It'd be really great if you could post your X config here. I desperately want to get a 4760 (as I sit typing this on my ancient K6-2 500) but Linux and a properly running X are an absolute must.

After seeing the difficulty others were having configuring the 4760 to run X at native resolution I was despairing of having to buy an inferior Dell or something ( ). I even contacted Xi to see if their proprietary Accelerated X would support the 4760's native res. (and me a stalwart GPL advocate only slightly less annoying than RMS). Their answer was a disappointing "Gee, I don't know...'!!

So, if you've found a good config for the 4760, please post. I really want my Sager!!

Here is the XConfig on my 4760. I mentioned in a previous post, I don't have dual heads going yet, I'm still fighting with getting settled into the 2.6 kernel:

BTW, this is with RH9 using the radeon driver provided.
