Windows 2003 Speed stepping, help it wont speed step

My company has given me windows 2003 server to install on my laptop (Acer Ferrari Mobile tin and light A64 3000+) for training purposes, everything has installed fine including drivers however one app wouldn't install the amd64 powernow software/driver everytime it tries to install it says "this operating system is not supported by the athlon 64 processor driver". The processor is running fine and in devices it looks ok. however im really annoyed as now i cannot make my laptop speed step down to 800 or 1600 thus the fan is constantly on thus the battery life is minimal. I really dont want to uninstall the OS as it has been paid for and I want it as my native OS.

I've been on the amd website and the drivers for the proceesor only support up to 2000/xp

PLEASE please help guys. Thank you

Hummm... may be off-base here but is there such a thing as an Opteron driver for Windows 2003? A64 and Opteron are very similar under the hood, after all... I'd see what's on AMD.com for that.

Otherwise - 2003 is a server OS, and servers don't generally use power savings... you may have to consider XP native and running 2003 in a virtual machine (VMWare or MS Virtual PC). I do this on a "decent, not great" laptop and it works fine so long as I keep my performance expectations reasonable. Plus I think you'll find that other software etc. etc. doesn't work right with 2003 and using it as your primary OS on a laptop for general use will become annoying after a while. Plus if you are learning 2003 for IT purposes, running in a VM is great as you can tweak away and roll back any old time.

Good luck!

if the installer for the application is a setup.MSI, rather then setup.exe, you edit it with the Microsoft ORCA editor to remove the "OS requirement" (XP, 2000, etc), which stupidly blocks you from installing it on Windows 2003, even though almost all applications, games, drivers still work fine with 2003
