I had the Norton suite on my desktop - it worked fine for several months (though was a bit of a resource hog), but a few weeks ago it stopped updating with errors from LiveUpdate. I still had 5 months of updates left in my contract. I uninstalled and reinstalled liveupdate - didn't help. Next step was to uninstall the entire Norton package, which is a huge PIA, and reinstall it - which is another huge PIA with copy protection, etc.
I'd been using Avast on my laptop, so I decided to try it on the desktop. Super easy install, significantly less resource utilization, less intrusive interface (after you turn off sounds) and it's free. Updates work better, not as many needs to reboot. Virus defiitions are updated frequently.
I've never had a virus, so I can't say how it compares in terms of protection. In terms of usability, Avast is as good or better than NAV or McAfee. I can't see going back.
