RAM is RAM, Memory is Memory - Page 2

If you use a 256MB & 512MB, it doesn't matter which goes to which slot. The performance will be the same.

I would agree with what you've said. Put the 512 in the primary slot and 256 in a more easily accessible slot so you could upgrade it in the future.

Update a few things.

i would also add that most 3rd party ram.. that buy chips and a pcb and assemble tends to be less reliable..

Agree. Their PCB isn't up to par and tends to give a lot of problem in the long run. Go with Kingston or Corsair they've been very realiable. Their memory are usually lifetime warranty too.

I agree with the others on this and say yes the manufacturer is important.

You can find value memory from Kingston, Corsair and Crucial at very resonable prices. I like ordering directly from Crucial, because they have a great return/exchange policy.

I want to ask if people find it strange that the PC3200(400) XMS or Value Select Corsair memory is cheaper then the PC2700(333) versions. I wouldn't mind getting the PC3200(400), but I know some notebooks have issues, if they only support PC2700(333) even when the memory is downclocked.

Order directly from Crucial and online get like 5%-10% off automatically. Which is pretty nice.

Crucial

Ditto to the last post. I ordered 512mb Crucial memory online to take my total to 1GB, and I haven't had 1 problem with it. It works great, and is very stable. I'd even put Crucial above Corsair on the list (but still just below Kingston).

Great thread.

Thread necrophilia is bad, mmmkay? You're replying to a post made almost half a year ago.

LOL! You're right! Sorry 'bout that. I don't usually have that problem. I followed someone's link to this thread, and I must have thought it was new. Sheesh... how embarrassing.

Pollutes the list of new threads with stuff that the discussion about ended a long time ago. It's not so bad when it only happens to a few threads, but you can only go so far in that direction before most threads you see on the first page don't matter.

Agreed. And considering how fast notebook technology changes, a thread on here from just 6-8 months ago can be completely outdated. If people need to see that stuff, they can do a search.

This thread had said that nearly all notebooks used DDR333, so that shows it's age. Today most are DDR400 or DDR2-533. That is how fast stuff moves in 6-8 months.
