recommend me a 12 in

Thread Starter
im looking for a 12 in notebook (under or near 5lbs) with a pentium m, and at least 512 mb of ram, but a gig is strongly prefered (i run a lot of engineering applications), i also need at least a 60 gig hard drive, all for near $1400 give or take a bit. i also would like a good battery, upwards of 3 hours of normal use, being able to put in an extended battery would also be nice.

the closest thing ive found to what i need is from cyber power inc (http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/high...u31000.asp?v=d)

the only negative ive seen on this notebook is the no extended battery, and while the battery is reported at 4 hours, ive read in the forums that it is usually between 2 and 3. i asked on of the workers at the company and they told me that it is a uniwill 223ii0, and i have read reviews on that and seems like a quality procuct for the money, but i would like to know if someone has any other suggestions, or if anyone has delt with cyber power inc before.

what i want is something similar to this:

pentium m 745
1 gig corsair memory
80 gig 5400 rpm hd
integrated video
cd burner/dvd drive (would enjoy dvd burner but its not needed)
12 in display
integrated wireless g/b
no os

$1283 + tax + shipping (cyberpowerinc)

thanks for any suggestions or comments

How about the 12 inch dell?

ive configured that and it ends up being more expensive if i add on ram and hd and processor, ive also heard that there batteries havnt been good in the past, dont know too much about the 700m batteries though

yeah you can get the dell inspiron 700m starting @ $999 and with the upgrades you want except for the ram you can get it @ $1,286 WITH the extended battery. Just buy the ram yourself later. The screen is also a 12.1inch widescreen and the best screen i have seen on a laptop, it's super bright.

extended battery lasts up to 5.5 hours too

do most notebooks run the same kind of ram, about how much is this ram?
ill look at the 700m again, but more suggestions would also be appreciated

maybe you were looking when there was a special on that notebook, i just configured it with pentium m725, 256 mb ram, 60 gig hard drive, 8x dvd drive, and with 8 cell battery and it is $1356, and after adding the ram when it gets here + shipping and tax it would still be a bit more then i want to pay, good suggestion though

you are prolly looking in the home section. if you go in small business it starts @ $999, and i configured it to what u want except for the ram and it came to $1296

i see it now, i can get everything but the ram for $1385 after shipping and tax (shipping was free)

is there still no way to get dell not to put windows on there? i already have a copy

will definately be considering this

on the 700m, the hard drive is only 4200 rpm, if i got this i would want to upgrade that as well as the ram, what kind of ram and hd would i want to get (ive never owned a laptop before)? i think i would want at least a 5400 rpm drive, how big are the performance differences. any recomendations on products? i see a lot of people are going with the 1 gig 200 pin ddr sodimm low power/low heat ram from oempcworld. any suggestions in the 512 range.

Asus M5N/Asus S5N.

i have seen that notebook at a few sites and they all sell it for much more then im looking to spend, maybe link where you have gotten yours from. a friend of mine has a m5n and he paid $2000 for it, i really like it, but thats out of my price range.

What currency?

preferably near $1400, but i just looked at that s5n pearl white and that thing looks really nice, whats the best prices youve seen on that notebook? (maybe i can barrow money from my parents)

In Canada, I've seen the S5N go for $1700-1800 dollars.... if you're in the US, it should be a few hundred cheaper, which puts it in your price range.

that looks nice but its $1600 and i would be needing to buy a new hard drive, and more ram, so that gets really expensive.

so as of now im leaning toward the dell, but thinking i will just get the cheapest hard drive they offer, and cheapest ram, and upgrade when i get it because i would want something faster then 4200 rpm, and their ram is too expensive.

anyone have suggestions on the best places to buy 512 sticks of ram, and either a 5400 rpm 80gig or a 7200 rpm 60 gig (havnt decided yet). ive looked at newegg, and zip zoom fly and oempcworld, if someone else has some suggestions let me know

also if anyone knows the approx difference in performance between the 5400 rpm drives and 7200 rpm drives, that would help me decide.

thanks

The 1600 dollar price is in Canadian. If you are american it will be $1350.
