thanks to everybody for the help, but i think im just about to get the 700m configured as follows:

pentium m 745
256 mb ram (to be upgraded upon recieving)
60 gb hard drive (free upgrade so i might as well take it, and probably upgrade when i get the money)
8 cell bat
24x cd rw (free upgrade)
intel pro wireless b/g (figured it was worth the extra $10)

total = $1289 after (california) tax and shipping is free

any last minute advice?

Re: i700 hard drive

Hey-

I just got my 700m a couple days ago and I called Dell to ask about my hard drive b/c I wanted to upgrade. My i700 shipped with a 5400rpm hitachi 60gb drive, the guy said most 700m's nowadays ship with 5400rpm drives.

one last question, ive called the dell people and they seem to have little to no idea what they are talking about (there just reading off the screen)

i understand that the 700m takes 200pin ddr so-dimm memory, and im trying to figure out what is the maximum speed the board supports. the guy at dell said it comes with pc-2700 (333mhz) but i see pc-3200 corsair on new egg for a good price. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...145-506&depa=0

i was curious if this would run at 400 mhz in the 700m, and if not, could i get it anyways and run it at 333mhz (it seems to be the cheapest corsair there is).

thanks everybody for the help youve given me so far

If it's running Pentium M, at the current moment I believe it can only take PC2700. Someone correct me on this if I am wrong.

but sense the pc3200 ram is the cheapest ive seen, could i still get that and put it in the 700m, or would that create problems, also would it draw more power then if i put in pc2700?

Dell won't sell ANY notebook or desktop without an OS. Same as HP, IBM, SONY, etc. No major company will sell a PC without an OS.

The PC3200 SODIMM should work fine as PC2700, but there is a small chance of the system not liking it. So I'd definately try it, just make sure it's returnable without a huge hassle in case you are the 1%.

well, i have my 700m, and i love it, dell origionally told me it would be shipped on the 22nd, and i got the cheapest shipping, so i assumed it would be here (san diego) at least a week after that. well, i got it on the 21st, so needless to say im happy about that. the memory does work with it, couldnt tell anybody about the difference in power or heat, because i never turned it on without the memory in.

my only complaint seems to be the lack of a user manual, i would like to know what all these little lights mean. i also had to go online to see how to install the memory.

lastly, does anybody know why there is a 3.5 gig partition on the hard drive with 1.4 gigs free. what is on this partition? can i delete it? i would really like to put linux on here (mostly for learning purposes) and that would actually be pretty close to how big of a partition i would need.

edit:

the lights are (in order) wifi, power, battery charging, hard drive usage, cap lock, scroll lock;

the 3.5 gig partition can be deleted as expected without any issues, its just a thing for dell customer support and problem solving. i deleted it and used partiton magic to resize the windows partition, and now have a 6 or 7 gigs worth of linux, swap, and boot partitoins for gentoo, if you search for user ryan00davis (you have to actually click search and type it into search users) of www.forums.gentoo.org, you can see some of the problems ive had and some of the solutions they have come up with, its a great set of forums with great support, there is a lot more info if you search 700m as well.
