gentoo + 8887 == almost there...

havent been here for a while.
currently deployed in okinawa japan,
and theyve got no high bandwidth
in the backwater base they put me in.

anywho, from 56k land :

I've tried out the latest release of gentoo
on the 8887, and so far everything looks
awesome, just gotta get the tvtuner working, and I wont have to be miserable.

was wondering,
is it possible to package everything in my portage tree? <ie for future revuilding/reinstallment>

also for the forum guru/linux hounds, why not put up a detailed set of howto's for each sager model + corresponding distro? make it easier for new owners to get their demigodsagerbox up to spec.

anywho, cheers.

do you mean everything you have installed, or every package available in portage?

the thing with writing up howtos is that i'm pretty sure everyone only has one sager; so we'd have to find someone for each model to write up one.

plus, there are many different distros - that's a lot of howtos. and certain people only have experience with certain distros - i've only used gentoo for a long time now. i suppose anyone who's willing could write up how they set up their own install...

If you wanted to back up the packages you have downloaded, copy your /usr/portage/distfiles directory. This contains all the packages you have downloaded before compiling, and if you wanted to download something from somewhere else and place it on your machine, you can put it here. I have several time downloaded a package at work with Download Accelerator and copied it there so my laptop doesn't have to. This doesn't back up your tree, though, but it may speed things up during a recompile. You will still need to get the current portage tree using rsync, and hope most of your packages haven't been updated.

I'd suggest you just find a way to copy the entire /usr/portage directory to a CD or another partition. Then you don't have to worry about emerge sync, portage is also saved!

How's the TV-tuner in Linux? Did you get it working? If not, try the BT8x8 drivers from sourceforge. They should work...

How about the modem under linux? Is that working? I know it's one of those winmodems, so I hope you actually got that working, and typed your message in linux!

tvtuner works awesome
-emerge tvtime.
looks even better than the windows counterpart

as for the radeon m9 with xfree drm,
<emerge ati-drivers wont compile, lame> so I stick with the standard dri stuff <is it CVS?>
crashes are RANDOM....
quake3 will run,
mods like urban terror crash,
anyone got it working?

sounds ok.
dvd playback via mplayer needs tweakage

winmodem is working under slmdm via smartlinks drivers, forgot the site but itshould be in these here forums......
thank god, LINUX SUPPORT from the company...... weird.

wouldnt even wanna try the pcmcia stuff yet, havent got any pcmcia hardware to full around with anyway.

ieee1384 stuff is questionable,
was gonna full around with it, if I bought this DVD-R that can hook up through ieee1394 slot, anyone got it working?

overall, the 8887 is rockin'
gentoo-wise at least.

I have done the emerge tvtime thing. When I load it, it says it cant find /dev/video0, no such device ... I checked ... its there

Is there any other steps I'm missing?

I have compiled in the video4linux drivers. Is there a driver for the tvtuner I specifically need?

Any help would be appreciated.
