I need to buy a laptop before Jan 31st 2005 when I'm leaving the US. Here's the criteria:

1) Planning to install both Windows XP and Linux on it, either Mandrake or Fedora.

2) I expect to use it as my personal laptop, but I'll do software development on it. So it will be some sort of a desktop replacement, but I don't want it too big.

3) Screen quality and good video (leaning towards a widescreen) are very important for me. This applies to all video demands: long working sessions, dvd watching, and games. One of the laptops I'm considering is the Sony S260. I don't mind at all it's small size , in fact I like it, but I'd choose a larger/heavier laptop if there are substantial benefits in power or features.

4) Audio on a laptop I don't care much. I'm an audio enthusiast, so I won't be using the laptop when I want excellent audio.

5) I'd rather not have a laptop with a battery that lasts only 2 or so hours.

6) My budget ceiling ~ $2K.

I've used an IBM T40 at work for more than a year now, and have no problems with it. Wonder if an IBM would be a good option vs. the S260, or a Toshiba? Maybe some other brand? Also, how about new models in January?

Recommendations highly appreciated. Thanks a lot!
