Heyyo,

Well, I"m downloading a file from a family member of mine (it is legal, so don't go on rambling about it being illegal or whatever...), and I've had my computer on since...oh, about 7am (central standard time (texas)); the file is ~2 Gigs (it says it will now take about 19 more hrs to fully download). So my question is...how long is "safe" enough (and healthy enough), to keep my computer on and running for; is 19 more hrs too long? I can always pause it, and continue, but I don't really wanna wait; I'm impatient.
THANKS!

i am guessing it is a desktop we are speaking about here. as long as it is properly cooled you should have no problems having it on all this time. at one point i had my lappy on for over 30 hours...not a good idea heat wise...but it lived

Re:

Oops, sorry I forgot to mention such crucial information. Yes, it is indeed a desktop, and it has about 2 or 3 fans.

You should break up the files into bits, so you can have sesions

We have a computer here in my workplace that runs one instrument. It is never used for anything else. It is an IBM 8088 and I would say it has been running roughly since 1988 except for 3-4 power failures along the way. So I would think you would be OK for a 19 hour download if this one can last about 26 years. LOL

I run a desktop 24/7 ripping dvds into svcd. CPU is at fullepower 95% of the time and the 2 HDD are always going. never had it freeze up or anything so a 2 gig download should be fine

Lol. Wowee! That's a long a** time! I hope it (mine) can. Thanks for the feedback all!

Well, i keep my desktop on 24/7 getting some BT files, reencoding videos, Folding, mostly 100% load. Considering it's watercooled, temps are only in the low 40's but still.

Most computer systems should be ok if they're left on 24/7 unless it's seriously undercooled and ur living in the middle of the desert without air-con of any type. Hell, i keep my lappy on 24/7, though i keep it on standby mode most of the time.

Since you're only downloading something it's even simpler as CPU load shouldnt be above 20% most of the time (estimate includes like 200 or so instances of spyware in the background). A clean system shouldnt even be over 10% downloading. It's going to be pretty cool.

Here's the funny thing about silicon: it either breaks as soon as you get it, or it lasts forever.

The only thing stopping you from running your computer "forever" is bad hardware, bad software, or a bad electric company. I ritually leave my computer on downloading. In fact, thats what it is doing right now. 4GB no less. You should be fine.

Very True, my old 1.7GHz Williamette CPU is still going strong to this day, as well as my P3 733MHz Slot 1. But not so true for motherboards. The IDE channels on my Asus P4B533 gave out after 2 years of use.

My 2.4C is going downhill too . It used to be able to do 280fsb on crappy air cooling no problem, now it cant even run 275fsb on water and i was shooting for 300fsb with this watercooling setup.
But some get better, like my dad's 2.4C, used to not even do 3GHz or 250fsb on good air (Thermalright SP-94), but after 4 months under a stock heatsink and running 2 instances of F@H 24/7, it can do 270fsb on stock cooling, cant wait to get it under this watercooling set

If your ever thinking about making a server or keeping a computer on that long, you might want to consider ECC RAM...

(I ment for a loooooong Time! not just 19hrs)
ECC Ram is much slower, only if your running a server should you use it.

But as most everyone, I leave my computer on 24/7. I never turn it off. As everyone has said, as long as it is cooled well, you are good to go.
