Doubling RAM to 1GB - What Brand?

Hi all - I received my Inspiron 8600c at the end of June with 512MB of memory, and am now looking to double that for christmas. Originally, I was going to go with Transcend memory, which I've heard good things about: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...208-003&depa=0
However, I found this stick from Kingmax, which is almost $15 cheaper: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...155-122&depa=0

Which would you guys recommend? Have you heard of Kingmax before? Is there a better deal I'm missing somewhere else? Thanks in advance for the help!

Here is the kingmax memory you need: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...155-122&depa=0

In your post you have the link to the PC-2100 memory.

May I add I bought 2 of these sticks of memory and it has worked flawlessly for the 5 months I have had it installed... Also a friend of mine refered me to this brand because he had great sucess with this memory... Its a great buy, and I have only had good experiences with the kingmax brand...

D'oh! I had the right page originally, but when I went back to Newegg to link the page to this thread, I must've rushed and not chosen the right one. I'll change it in the original thread. Thanks Striker!

Also, thanks for the input. Keep the suggestions coming!

Go with Corsair, you won't regret it. Memory is the key to a system (other than CPU).

many have used kingsmax wif success. im using it atm as well, no complaints. if u buy corsair ur basically juz paying more for the name corsair, i doubt there is a significant performance diff between the 2 brands, if any at all.

Even you're spending your own coin, go with the cheapest of the tested brands that others in this forum have experience with...

If I was replacing all of the memory now, I probably would consider Corsair more since both sticks would be from the same company. However, I ordered my 8600 with 1 512MB stick with the mindset that I would just add another stick in the future. So I don't think I would have much to gain by going Corsair with this route (with the higher price and all).

What brand memory did Dell install? I've seen current Dell laptops with Elpida (good), Samsung (good), Infineon, Crucial, Kingston (all so-so), & Hynix (my last choice).

Kingston from Fry's they have a toll free # call and tell them you have a Dell I 8600 and want to add 512MB of memory, they'll send you the right object U.P.S. I like like lot of others here on the forum now have 1,024MB AKA 1GB RAM

Can't go wrong with Crucial or any of the other respected names.

I was considering this issue myself having been recently burned with the purchase of the cheap 1Gb "Premium" memory stick from Outpost. That memory died within the week.

I took a look at Anandtech and Kingmax is one of the well-reviewed memory manufacturers and their memory is also recommended for overclocking (irrespective of whether you'd overclock - it is a testament to the memory's quality). Apparently, they are an offshoot/spin-off of Corsair in Taiwan. I am referring to the Kingmax brand name, rather than to this specific notebook memory. It also helps that they provide lifetime warranty for all their memory.

I've purchased from crucial.com twice and have always been satisfied. I have no idea how their prices compare with the other memories mentioned, but there quality has always been good for me and when I was looking so were there prices.

I just got my kingston ram today. I bought it from www.newegg.com one day last week. I bought 1 dimm 512mb and I LOVE IT. --- I have a total of 640mb of ram now. I don't know how I ever lived with 256mb.

Go with kingston, crucial, or kingmax and you should be good. :-)

Which ram runs the coolest?? (temperature wise)

(Yes, this is a loaded question)
It's interesting you asked...I noticed a consistent 4-5 degree C temperature drop with Elpida modules; they have "high conductive" flat black heatsinks contacting the memory chips, on both sides of the module.
Hmmm..........ya, I've seen those, and actually I have 2 x 256mb of Hynix in PC2700 that came with my 600m and I also have 2 x 256mb of Elpida in PC2100 and they both seem to run the same, however my Elpidas do not have black caps over the chips like yours.

Any temps you can register thru fangui?? Mine warm up to about 43*C then if I get intensive they get in the upper 40's. I wish they could make cool ram that never got over about 35*C.......that'd be a dream!!
On AC power, and running at 'Always On' - FanGUI reports that the RAM idles at ~39C; after doing anything intensive for a while, it rises to ~43C.

Hope that helped.

Kingston is really good; kingmax i've read good reviews about so I say go with it
post #20 of 26
Yup; go with the brand on sale, you really won't see any performance difference with RAM that does not have heatsinks.
