can't install windows xp

I've tried installing xp home and pro off of 4 different install discs and no matter what, the machine always crashes with a blue screen when it tries to detect my 60 GB SATA harddrive. One of the discs I've tried is win xp pro service pack 2, so I assume it has the ability to work with SATA fine.

Anyone else have a workaround for getting any version of xp installed on this box? Right now my brand new notebook is a 12 pound paperweight, and I'm a little pissed.

FYI, these are all retail xp discs. not copies. Thanks.

Ok, sorry for the newbness of my last post. Have never had to install a serial ata drive on a new notebook before. Did a google on "sata install problems" and learned how the whole process works.

You need to hit F6 almost immediately after windows install starts to install drivers for an unknown SCSI or RAID adapter.

The drivers need to be on a floppy disc. The drivers in question are on the windows driver cd supplied by pc torque, so you browse that cd on another machine with Windows already running and copy the contents of the Drivers\RAID\ATA dir to a floppy disc. Just copy the entire contents. Windows complains if the directory structure is not maintained.

The Windows installation program on your notebook will eventually prompt you to provide the drivers for your SATA drive from your floppy. Insert the newly created floppy.

Newbness conquered.
Thanks for enduring.
