Review Xplorer s4-3200

I bought my Uniwill (259IA) in a shop in Australia under the name Milleania 6200 the only difference between them being the screen, mine is a 1280 x 800 the Xplorer is a wsxga.

My specs
Intel Pentium-m 735 1.7 Ghz dotham processor
1 Gb of ram (2 x 512Mb 2700 I presume I don’t know how to check)
80Gb Toshiba 4200rpm (I know it slow, but I’ll get to that later)
256Mb VRAM mobility radeon 9700 Gpu
4 x +/- DVD-RW
WXGA 1280 x 800
All the other standard things

Performance
It performs very well, quick to open new windows click links everything happens very quickly, despite it’s 4200rpm hard drive everything is accessed quickly whether this is just because the disk isn’t full or what I don’t know, it takes longer to boot up then “troy1964”s his is a 60 gig 7200rpm (don’t know exact times) but I was expecting a 4200rpm to be slower than it is, so I’m relived (I was worried when I found out that it was a 4200rpm drive the guy in the shop said that it was at least a 5400).
The processor run’s well enough I have very little to compare it to my old computer was a p3 800mhz so this thing kills it. I played C&C Generals on it, it ran very quickly buildings were build in 4 seconds, (it took more like 15-20 on my other computer. If that gives you some indication), Halo runs well on highest settings even when copying a dvd.

Sound
I had heard some horrible things about laptop speakers, so I was pleasantly surprised when they turned out fairly good, they sound nice at slightly louder than normal level but they lose quality fast when they are turned up higher, the built In sub helps think, overall good sound in my opinion at normal levels.

Heat
Internet surfing, and just general usage there is next to no heat, once the cpu is given something to do for long periods of time the right hand side does get warm but
But defiantly tolerable, the hottest part of it is just above the hot air outlet and power hole, but that is still tolerable, I think this laptop dissipates it heat well there is a relatively even spread of heat all over not much difference between hottest and coolest parts leaving me to think it is well designed for heat distribution, there is a hot component in each corner I think, cpu top right, cd drive top left, hard drive bottom left, I think gpu bottom right (not 100%). I haven’t tried it on my lap but I would say it would be decent, there is a fan intake top right hand side on the bottom to look out for though. In the instruction booklet (which doesn’t come with it, it says that on 35 C days parts at the back of the case may get up to 50 C, I think that that would have to be an extreme case because the way it was with me, running for hours at 100% cpu it didn’t get close to that hot.

Noise
Next to silent with the fan not on (it doesn’t kick in until the cpu does a fair amount of work, so that’s good). When the fan is on it is still fairly quite, non obtrusive, defiantly audible but much quieter than my desktop. My hard drive can be noisy but, most people would get a different drive to me anyway.

Build quality
I haven’t taken much notice of the build quality of other notebooks so I don’t have that much to compare it to, I can tell you that the base is very solid next to no give when you push down on it, defiantly not flimsy, the screen is less solid, it is still good, but less sturdy it gives a little when you push down on the lid when the laptop is closed, detracting from it’s sturdy feel.

Screen
I have the 1280 x 800 screen, it looks good, very bright, large and crisp, a bit higher resolution wouldn’t hurt but it is fine for me. As for ghosting I can’t tell so, either there is little ghosting or I just don’t notice. My screen has 1 pixel that is sometime green or white when it is meant to be another colour but it is normally good. If the wsxga screen is a good as this one you’ll be happy.

Touch pad
Originally I didn’t like the touch pad, but after changing the sensitivity way up and a but of practice it becomes reasonable, I think I like the Toshiba touch pads better, but this touch pad is not horrible, it is very usable, I have a mouse plugged in next to me but often use the touch pad instead. I don’t think I have mastered it yet and it will become easier to use, accidentally tapping it while typing is so annoying, I will have to change the settings so that it isn’t as big a problem.

Keyboard
The keyboard has a nice solid feel, the keys are responsive, it feels durable, I haven’t had any problem with button placement, I’m not a touch typer so that might not say much, I imagine it is similar to other new keyboards out there.

Battery
It is a 6 cell battery, I haven’t used it on battery much, but I got around 2 hours 20 minutes with general internet use and a few software installations, so it’s not shocking, especially if you wanted to turn down the brightness and use powerstrip or something like that. It also has an instant on that is suppose to save battery power when watching a dvd, cd, video/music file etc, by not having to boot into windows,

Graphics
GREAT, I have only run C&C generals and halo but they both look great at high setting, I don’t have much to test it with, the one in the shop with standard drives, standard power settings, everything got around 2900 in mobile mark 2003, 10 500 in 2001 (that is just off memory, I can’t remember exactly) not as good as the sager 3790 but the specs were only the same as mine, and with no changes to drives or power settings, I think a 7200 rpm drive and a 2GHz processor plus some settings changes, would drastically improve that score.

Overall
Very happy with it so far, I has done everything I ask of it very quickly, it is a nice size weight ratio, it is fairly large but a reasonable weight. Lots of features including instant on, a silent button (throttles cpu so that it doesn’t need the big fan and can run next to silent), wireless on/off switch (better than a button or an option in windows in my opinion. It has the power to play the latest game (getting half life 2 for Christmas). Heat isn’t a real issue with this laptop. If I had the option I would have got a faster hard drive, but mine is ok. I would have liked another 1 or 2 usb ports on the back instead of having 3 on the right hand side. Great laptop good work the people at uniwill.

If you have any questions about the laptop I will do my best to answer them.
Thanks the people on this forum have been really helpful while deciding on a laptop.

Thx for this review. I think I'm definitely leaning towards this unit, although a few options still trouble me.

Dartm,

Thanks for the review. Which Harvey Norman did you see it in the flesh at. I wouldn't mind checking it out myself.

However, I do have a concern. The benchmarks you got and those from Troy's review, are not what you'd expect from an ATI 9700 at 256. The same GPU in the Sager 8790 has been producing 3D01 scores of over 11,800.

My 9700 with 64Mb in the Asus gets 10,800 and in my Sony 11,000.

So it seems to me that the Uniwill/Cyberpower/ITC is being underclocked to a significant degree, presumably to keep temperatures down. If this is the case, and heat is that much of a problem, there's no real point having the 256, or even a 128.

Mind you, it is easy to check.

Could you download and install ATI Tools? http://www.radeon2.ru/atitray/

It'll tell you what your default clock speeds are. Mine on the Sony are 385 (memory) and 223 core. My Asus is 385 and 192 from memory.

Cheers

I got it from Harvey norman in Newcastle, there is also one in stock somewhere in george st Sydney, according to ITC (www.itchannel.com.au) these are the only 2 in stock in nsw, they have a contact email if you wish to ask about retainlers in other states.
I agree with you on the not scoring what you would expect but also consider troy and my processors are slower than most and my hard drive, i will check my clock speeds and update drives bios etc... then see what i get, it should be an improvement. I will run them when i can (it's defraging now so over the next few hours)

398 core, 216 memory, acording to omega drives options pannel

Ah, then that explains it. The Sager 8790 which has the same GPU is clocked at 415/280, hence the higher benchies.

The question would be whether they have underclocked it for battery life or heat issues. How brave do you feel?

Cheers

James,

I'd like to check one of these out in the flesh. I live near the center of Sydney, could you tell me any stockists?

Thanks

Does over clocking void warranty?

Of course, But even though people do it we have never rejected a warranty claim due to the possibility that the machine has been overclocked

James,

Sometime next week would be nice, but there is no huge hurry. To be honest the lack of WSXGA is a deal killer for me, but I'd still like to have a sticky beak just for reference to friends.

BTW, if you want to have the killer laptop, it would be one that size (or Asus M6 size) with a WSXGA enhanced screen (Sony Xbrite, Toshiba Trubite etc) and the ATI 9700 or better.

That's what I'd be requesting from your ODMs.

Cheers

Well, for the time being, I'll have a NuSheild on mine, until I figure out how to put an HP Brightview 15.4" in there... (Sony's Xbrites only do SXGA )

@DartM

Nice review! It confirms my experience with it as I've wrote before. Seems Uniwill have a good control, production line working on this system. They seem to manage to ship the same quality around the world.

Running this machine on your lap isn't a problem at all....I played for about 1 hour Americas Army on it (in 1280x800, settings very high, on AC) and no part of the lappy was to hot to hold.

Doing a Bios upgrade from v 1.01 to 1.05 made no difference for me at all! So, when your system runs fine don't flash needed.

I did it, finally, after weeks of indecision and 'patiently' waiting for the ultimate review.
Well, yesterday I got tired of waiting and decided to take the jump: I ordered an Uniwill 259IA03 laptop, locally known as the Alpha-2500 (aka as Jewel Diamond-2500 or the Diabloo W2600, and those are just the names they are known by in the Netherlands alone). Makes you wonder how many names this lappy will go by in the end, worldwide...

The specs:
Centrino Intel Pentium M 735 1,7 GHz
15,4" WXGA TFT (1280 x 800)
1024MB (2x512) SO-DIMM DDR-PC2700
80 GB Harddisk (5400rpm)
ATI M11 Radeon 256 MB (dedicated)
8x Double Layer DVD-RW (+/-)
Intel 2200 802.11B+G
Wireless Lan 11 + 54 MB
TV Out
SD Cardreader MMC,SD, MS &MS pro
etc, etc... you all know the specs by heart by now.
No dead-Pixel warranty (8 days)
Grandtotal Euro 1,415. (VAT included)

Delivery-time: a few days, hopefully before Christmas!

Now, I know you're all waiting for more reviews. I've been there. I've been following the topics closely for the past few weeks, hoping for daring folks who would buy this nb first and then post the ultimate review we are all waiting for. All eyes are now pleafully directed my way, naturally, expecting me to write this Mother of all Reviews.
Ha! Not likely. I will try, of course, but - since this is my first notebook ever and my first review on a lappie - don't expect too much of it.

Anyway, got to lay my hands on it first and have a Merry Christmas in between before Xploring this Xplorer. It's still a dream.
A nice one though.

I'll keep you'll posted!

Nice. I would pick one up now myself too, but doing with my Tax Return money hehe So i have to wait a couple of months.

hi Elckerlyc , Where did you buy the notebook from? Im also in the Netherlands, and was looking at the Jewel version. Also the Jewel Topaz. Looking at your specs, looks like you got a good deal for the price.

Hi Kiwi,

Yep, I'm quite satisfied with this deal myself!
I should add though that this is a version without the TV-tuner, which is allright with me as I prefer an external one (better quality, hardware coding etc). Also the bezel is black and the armrest silvery, contrary to the common pictures. It looks superb.
I got it from ComputerPirates (Weesp) but they don't advertise it anymore. I believe they only had a limited supply, perhaps from Computerland.

I haven't had the time yet to do extensive tests. Installed Win-Xp and some drivers, tried the keyboard etc. Sofar I haven't found anything wrong with it (yet), except for 1 'blue-pixel' at the extreme rightside of the screen. I can live with that.
Right now it's undergoing kind of a duration-test; I'm recording the Top2000 broadcast on Radio2 continuously and saving the recordings as ogg-files. It's running now for 4 days on end without any problems. The cooler kicks in approx 70% of the time and the right/frontend gets a little warm but not by much.
I'm dying to do some more playing with it but decided not to interrupt the recordings. I painfull decision, I can tell you....
More news will follow...

infra-red

I was wondering if your Uniwill 259IA3 had an infrared port? ie to send files to another computer or device with an infrared port?

Thanks in advance,
