Making Mozilla's Firefox "FASTER"

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-3 times faster now.

Hmm. I still don't find Firefox appreciably faster than IE to load pages and it is often noticeably slower, especially if there numerous pics. Ecept for the final suggestion, I already those Firefox settings too.

ANy thoughts?

firefox is slightly faster for me on many sites vs ie, but some sites ie is faster, however due to gaping security holes i preffer to opt out of ie

I've added it to the notebook FAQ sticky as a link for future references.

Here's a couple more while you're at it...

network.http.max-connections - double whatever number is there
network.http.max-connections-per-server - same as above
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy - same as above
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server - same as above

Now Firefox should be maxed out!

I do see a slight difference. I have to try pages that I haven't gone to lately, but any speed gained is great.

Thx smilepak for the info.

I have used Firefox since the Phoenix days, and I can't ever see myself going back to IE as my main browser.

there is a massive post here

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=53650

or you can install the network tweak extension here

http://www.bitstorm.org/extensions/

or you can use the above method.

be ware that in my opinion as you will see posted thoughout the first linked thread, i believe there are security risks involved with some of the tweaks they offer.. although they are dowplayed, they are present imho.

also if anyone needs corporate rollout info on firefox or thunderbird let me know.. i am writing a manual for the community since I have been rolling it out since .6 and have dug through a LOT of configs to get it going well.

This violates standards and is depreciated.

Now.. when you say "same as above" do you mean we should have the same value as in the "max connections" tab? or should be just double whatever value is already present in those tabs?
this is the same as installing the tweak network settings extension available for firefox right?

No idea, I haven't tried.

It works! Awesome thank you very much smilepak!
Sorry, should've clarified...

..."same as above" means to double the current value.

good stuff.

I was bummed when they removed that nglayout command from the newer versions of Firefox, I had no idea that you could just add it back in.

thanks

more or less.. there is far more info to be gleaned pagingthrough the massive mozillazine thread.. butin a untshell unless your machine isn't the fastest.. the tweak network settings extension is all you'll ever need.. and probably the easiest way to do this.. launch it.. hit power and click ok.. relaunch firefox

there are a TON of config options for firefox and thunderbird that are hidden.. and if you want some feature.. check the extensions forum at mozillazine. chances are it's made..
