Horrible Delay / Computer Lag

running a 2.6ghz 800fsb p4 with HT enabled, 512 ram, 60gb 5400 HD with the ati 128mb 9600 mobility.

When loading full screen games and doing pretty much anything that requires the computer to deal with more than one program at a time taking up memory and actively running, my computer slows down to a halt, takes an extremely long time to load anything and everytime something does try to load it cops my computer up horribly, does anyone know how to fix this problem? (ram usage never is above 75% when i check)

also fi this helps , while playing the game , when a few new characters load up on the screen at the same time, i get the very bad lag also / computer chop.

You need to supply some additional information. My computer runs poorly tells us nothing.

Let's start with the basics.

When was the last time you ran a spyware cleaning program? (I recommend spybot search and destroy and adaware se, both free)
Updated your antivirus definitions and ran a thorough scan? ( recommend either avg antivirus or avast antvirus, both free)
When did you last defrag?
Run a scandisk (or chkdsk at the command line)?

At least 50 percent, probably more, of the "my computer is slow" complaints I see are directly related to the above.

all were done within the last few days, just wondering how you would advise someone to run chkdsk, i did it but i couldn't tell if it was fixing the errors or not when i rebooted the computer to have it run.

To see the results of a chkdsk, look in the event viewer under application directly after a reboot...look for WINLOGON even, double click, and see the results.

While you are there, in event viewer, look for any events in Applications or System with a RED X, or yellow exclamation.

No, well, not no, but that is not what you want to see...look for winlogon, double click--that reveals what the chkdsk found.

As for those warnings/errors..you would need to look at the the error description (double click) to determine what they exactly mean.

Some are obvious---w32time, for example, just means that windows could not contact a time server to set your windows clock. MrxSmb is typically found when you're in a network sharing files and the computer is having difficulty establishing a connection. WinMgtmnt is a generic term....could be a lot of things. Browser typically has to do with a group of networked computers having an election to see who is the browser master...Usernv...that one just ticks me off. Some appication has a hook into the registry so windows cannot unload the user.

Of all of them, only the last one causes significant delays--and that only when shutting down.

Take a look through task manager and see what processes are running.

this is taskmanager:

svchost.exe -> 3 of them under system, 2 of them under local service, 2 under network service.

lsass.exe

winlogon.exe
system
system idle process taking up 90~% CPU - 96% CPU

all the above are under system except what is mentioned...

where do i find winlogon to double click and find what chkdisk found? (if you mean the file in c:\windows\system32 it doesn't open )

The winlogon event is recorded in EVENT VIEWER, which you looked at earlier. When you double click on an event, it displays information on the event.

That is an extraordinarily short list of processes in taskmanager....It is also a little peculiar in the number of svchost.exe (a generic process that could be several things). It is not a terrifyingly large number, but a couple more than normal. Could be several things.

Either way, I don't think that is the issue. I would still like to see the defrag log, but how are you doing as far as temperature? Run mobile meter while operating your system.

You can also check the disk by right clicking the drive in windows explorer, Properties, Tools, Check Now button.
