i bought some screen wipes at compusa, $10 for 80. they seem to leave more streaks than they clean. try some 30 grit sandpaper with everclear, it's a trade secret.

A slightly damp cloth. No windex, 409, etc, just plain water - H20

I use these on my car

I little water and that's it. If someones been touching your screen with their filthy dirty fingers then use eyeglass cleaning solution.

I'd stay away from any ammoniated cleaners.

3M cleaning cloths

I use those cleaning cloths by 3M. You use them dry and without any cleanser. They just clean better than anything else there is. Just make sure the cloth is clean before you use it. These are also washable and reusable, they last years and are the best for cleaning glass or other smooth surfaces. They won't scratch but they could pick up something that does so always shake them out vigorously before using on anything that could scratch.

I use Kimwipes EX-L Delicate Task Wipers and Zeiss Lens Cleaner (Both purchased at a local optician)

cleaning the lcs screen

alchohol dries out the screen.
Just plain water will clean it with a non ebraisive cloth.

If your screen is scratched from rubbing it, then your out of luck.

not sure about LCD's but on CRT's you DO NOT use windex, it eats away at a little coating on your monitor that protects your eyes from all kinds of nastey stuff. I would assume LCD's are the same so I woudl suggest a damp clothe with some water on it.

the first time I used windex on my screen I got streaks from hell! ..so it all depends on the screen .some screens have antiglare coatings etc that are very touchy with chemicals ..I do not suggest any chemicals at all. Some may be ok ,but alot have things like amonia which will dry out the plastic on your screen and turn it yellow..best thing to do IMHO ..is to get some microfiber cloths and use them dry (kensington makes some) .these things work like a CHARM! if your screen is very ,VERY dirty you can use a 50/50 isopropanol alcohol /water mixture on a soft cloth as this is what alot of manufaturers use on alot of LCD before they leave the factory. hope this helps.

I seem to have the best results with a very very soft sponge and a little H20 cleans up the whole machine very nicely I have a IBM T40 and the cover is made up of a magnesium composite(which I am sure we all knew) but it has the tendency to get fingerprints and this is the best solution i have found for all around good cleaning gets off even the most stuborn ones. Hope this helps.

Very soft sponge a little mild detergent lather it up rinse the sponge lightly anf off you go.

Last time I checked, I believe CRT's use leaded glass to protect you from energetic radiation engendered by high-power electrons hitting a barrier... God, I hope the lead doesn't wash out, I'd be poisoned twice! (Once by lead, another by radiation)

Windex is generally pretty safe. The amount of ammonia in it is VERY little, because even a very small amount would send you running out of your house. If you're paranoid, water always works best. Eyeglass cleaner/cloth would also work.

That windex eats away the CRT coatings in an urban legend. It used to be back in the 80's that with monochrome monitors, you had to be careful of not getting any chemicals on it because that could hurt the filtering layer which sharpened the contrast of the chrome. In this day and age CRT's are actually very well made and windex will NOT hurt them in any way. Anti-glare coating are usually one to three layers beneath the actual first layer coating of the average CRT monitor (with the notable exception of LaCie's phenomenal CRT's).

I found something even better however I doubt its helpful. One of clients I'm doing work for does chemical processing and such and they have a de-ionized water system.

Boy does it clean the screen nicely. Removes all the grease, no spots and perfectly clean. I interned for a power supply manufacturer and the R&D/prototype department I worked in had the worlds most expensive dishwasher (all stainless steel inside and out) It had DI water hooked up to, we used it to wash our circuit boards. No Dawn neccesary.

Just thought I'd mention it.
